Ross Ranked #5 MBA in Business Week

Latest Buisness Week MBA Rankings:

1) Chicago
2) Penn
3) Northwestern
4) Harvard
5) Michigan

Go Blue!

This is big. WSJ ranking us #1 or Princeton Review ranking Ross MBA #4 is nice, but it really doesn't mean much given their relative lack of reliability.

BusinessWeek, on the other hand, is quite possibly the most accurate and respected ranking of MBA programs. Some prefer the USNWR, which is just as good, but other that the USNWR, no ranking is as respected as BW.

Quite frankly, given the weight BW places on MBA student sentiment, I expected Ross to drop a little this year. That's what happens when an MBA program is homeless as Ross is while building its new facilty. If we manage to maintain a top 5 ranking this year, it is impressive.

alexandre - I can't challenge your substantive knowledge, but would add this development is "big" from a practical perspective. People in their 20's often ask me whether they should leave their jobs to go get a MBA full time. My answer (in the absence of a skill or interest in a very specific, identified field) is to only go to a top MBA school because the investment isn't otherwise typically worth it. And while Michigan has been worth it from an investment standpoint for quite a while, this ranking eclipses any hesitancy. The word on the street about Michigan (I work with a few of them) is that unlike some other schools the in-depth attention they pay to their undergrads actually enhances the MBA and vice versa. Of course, this could be explained by the fact that there's simply just a whole lot of smart people at the undergrad and MBA level, but it is, from a Michigan supporter's view, comforting to hear.

i won't be satisfied until michigan takes over the #1 spot in the usnews undergrad business program ranking.

In the past, Ross undergrad was #1, tied with Wharton. Now it's maintaining #3.

Forgiven, I think we have a good shot at knocking off MIT for number 2 (4.5 vs. 4.6) in the next couple of years. However, you may be six feet under before we catch Wharton (4.8). ;)

Mam, I agree that a full time MBA is a huge investment. Tuition alone for a 2-year program is $80,000+. Cost of living at most MBA programs is also pretty high and one must not forget the income that must be foregone for two years. After taxes, one loses over $200,000to earn an MBA. As such, one had better be certain about the decision. I'd say any of the top 25 MBA progams is worth the investment, if one is sure of their future goals. Beyond the top 25, I would recommend a company-paid, part-time MBA.

In terms of the dynamics between BBA and MBA students, Ross indeed seems to have struck a very healthy balance.

I am just looking forward to the new facility that's being built. It should be special!

When is construction supposed to end?

The new Ross Building should be completed by the fall of 2008. It will cost $150 million. Just to understand teh magnitude of this endeavour, keep in mind that Columbia's B school cost $60 million (in NYC, which is a great deal more expensive) and Wharton's facilities cost $100, but Wharton is roughly twice the size of Ross. Like I said, this new facility is going to be special.
