I plan to major in business, and I have been accepted by Carnegie Mellon University and University of Michigan. I am having a hard time deciding which one I should go to. As an out-of-state student, costs to my family for both colleges would be about the same.

I have always been under the impression that I would be better off going to a private college. However, after doing some recent research, it appears that Ross (UMich) is consistently ranked higher than Tepper (CMU) by organizations such as US News, Business Week, etc. Ross also seems to have more departments than Tepper, thus giving me more options to explore. Is it really true that Ross is generally a better business school?

And then here's the complication. I am still waiting for Ross' decision about Preferred Admission into Ross, and I probably won't hear from them until after May 1, which is the deadline for deciding the college. Worse yet, only 25% of the students in Ross will get accepted through Preferred Admission. The remaining 75% will have to apply to Ross in the freshman year after they get into UMich. It's a competitive process, and there's no guarantee that I will get into Ross. It would be ironic if I chose UMich and ended up in a different department....

I'm having a tough time deciding. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
