Ross

When you apply to Ross straight out of high school, you must first be admitted into LSA before even being considered for Ross. So you do not have to worry about applying twice. Just follow the normal application procedure. Apply to LSA, fill in the box for Ross school consideration and let the admissions process take its course.

If I filled in the box for "preferred admission" to Ross school, would it be more difficult for me to be admitted to Michigan?
Or is filling in that box have nothing to do with getting admitted?

Filling the box should not alter yourt chances with the college of LSA.

Filling in that box will not affect your chance of being admitted to LSA.

It also will not affect your chance later on when you apply to the 3-year program as a freshman -

"A: Preferred Admissions: If a student does not apply or is not accepted into the Ross School of Business as a high school senior, this does not hurt the chances of being accepted into the 3-year program. The Ross School of Business encourages students to apply for admission into the BBA 3-year program during their freshman year of college. The majority of students who will enter the 3-year BBA program will apply to the Ross School of Business as a University of Michigan LS&A freshman and begin the BBA program as a University of Michigan sophomore."

To answer some questions here:

Students who don't get into Ross may transfer, but many stay and major in econ or organizational studies.

It's also possible to develop an independent course of study and some students do this to fashion themselves as close to a business major as they can get without actually being in the business school. In fact, I think that was partly why the org studies major came about--U-M had fabulous organizational behavior resources anyway (including some robust grad programs), and many non-Ross students were creating their own majors that combined them at the undergraduate level. The U eventually formalized it into an interdisciplinary undergrad program.

While there aren't really majors within Ross, some students do concentrate in accounting and stay a 5th year to get a M.Acc.

Sorry about all the fuss but someone make this clear for me.
So... the "preferred admission"...
is it just a display of preference of study like declaring a tentative major
Or do I actually get accepted or rejected to the undergraduate business program?
And if i do get rejected from the program as a high school senior, am i still considered an applicant for LSA?
Also is it better to declare a major or not?
Lastly, do i get a disadvantage in admissions if i declare a major that is usually very popular?

You must get into LSA before they will look at Ross. Once you get into LSA, Ross will look at your application and either accept or reject you. If you don't make it in this year, you can apply next year.
