Rosters Set For Navy's Annual Alumni Men's Basketball Game

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-The rosters have been set for the annual Navy Men's Basketball Alumni Game, which will take place Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Alumni Hall. Thirty players representing classes from 1972-2005 will be represented.

Former assistant coach Jimmy Leary, who owns a career record of 0-2 in alumni games, will coach the Blue team. Leary's team is expected to be defensive minded as it features three of the top nine career steal leaders in school history.

Leary's squad will be led by point guard Brian Walker ('97), who ranks second all-time in career steals (193) and career assists (531) and led Navy to two NCAA Tournaments (1994 and 1997).

Skip Victor ('99), whose nickname was Master Lock for his defensive prowess, will team up with Walker to give the Blue squad a ferocious defensive backcourt. Victor led Navy to two NCAA tournament appearances (1997 and 1998) in his career and ranks fifth all-time at Navy in career steals (139).

The Blue squad should have plenty of scoring power with Kylor Whitaker ('86) and Erik Harris ('91) on the roster.

Whitaker is the 12th leading scorer in school history (1,273 career points) and ranks eighth in career assists (340). He was a three-year starter on two of the best teams in school history as the Mids went 26-6 and upset LSU in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1985 and then went 30-5 and advanced to the Elite 8 in 1986.

Harris is one of the best all-around players in school history ranking 14th on Navy's all-time scoring list (1,239 points), sixth in career three-point field goals (123), fourth in assists (472) and ninth in career steals (123).

Francis Ebong ('03), who ranks 11th all-time in career rebounds (572), is expected to be an inside presence for the Blue.

The Gold squad, coached by former Navy player Dave Bethel ('79), will have plenty of offensive firepower with two of the top four scorers in school history.

Kevin Sinnett ('79) is one of five Navy players to have his jersey retired and is Navy's third all-time leading scorer with 1,687 points. Sinnett was more than just a scorer in his career as he also ranks fourth (797) on Navy's career rebounding list.

Michael Heary ('98) led Navy to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments in 1997 and 1998 and ranks fourth on Navy's career scoring list (1,590 points), first in career three-point field goals (201) and ninth in career assists (250).

If there are any shots left over for the Gold, look for Jason Jeanpierre ('03) to take a few. Jeanpierre ranks second all-time at Navy in career three-pointers with 148 and stands 10th (244) on Navy's all-time assists list. Jeanpierre was also a terrific defensive player and ranks sixth in school history in career assists (138).

Victor Mickel ('94), who as a senior led Navy to the NCAA Tournament, will give the Gold great guard play as well as he ranks seventh all-time in career assists and 10th in career steals (117).

Mike Cunningham ('01) will be an inside presence for the Gold, ranking fifth on Navy's career blocked shots list with 107.

ANNAPOLIS, Md.-Mike Cunningham ('01) scored 12 points, while George O'Garro ('05) scored 11, including two monster dunks, to lead the Gold team to a thrilling 66-65 victory over the Blue in the Navy Men's Basketball Alumni Game played Saturday morning at Alumni Hall.

The Gold team nearly blew a 15-point second half lead as Francis Ebong ('03) and Skip Victor ('99) led a furious second half rally for the Blue. Ebong dominated inside with a game-high 17 points, including two dunks of his own, while Victor hit back-to-back three-point field goals in the final minutes to tie the game at 61. Victor finished with 11 points.

The Blue, however, was able to hold on thanks to two clutch free throws by Matt Sladky ('98) and a three-pointer by David Hooper ('06). Sladky finished with five points, while Hooper scored 10.

The Blue team had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds when Howie Cronauer ('72) had what he thought was a wide-open three-point field goal attempt, but Quintrell McCreary ('03) came out of nowhere and blocked his shot into the stands.

McCreary scored seven points for the Gold, while Cecil Fletcher ('99) and Jason Jeanpierre ('03) scored six points each. Demond Shepard ('02) added four points, Michael Heary ('98) three points and Kevin Sinnett ('79) scored two points.

Nate Jennings ('03), who was the MVP of last year's game, joined Ebong and Victor in double figures for the Blue team with 12 points. Taj Mathews ('05) added five points, while Kelvin Boatner ('06), Brian Walker ('97) and Kylor Whitaker ('86) scored four points apiece. John Williams ('02) and Scott Long ('03) each scored three points and Cronauer added two.
