Got wait listed also. Devastated, and so angry.
Rejected, but on the waitlist also. Does anyone know how many they usually take (if any)?
I would guess very few since the people that got in must be very interested
Probably very few, especially since the decision came early this year. In years past, the decisions came so late, people had taken other opportunities. They only take about 25-30 to begin with, so our chances are truly nil, I’m sure.
didn’t get in either! Is it just me or have programs been getting more and more competitive as years pass? Do you guys know anyone who has got in and what their stats are?
I don’t know, but I am very curious as to who actually did make the cut. Just out of curiosity, maybe we can share our credentials to compare. I am very interested in learning where my weakness lies so that I may improve for future applications, including college. Was it my GPA? My essay? Something else? I really wish I knew …
As am I. I’m very curious to know if my essays and GPA were lacking, or if my overall scientific experience was not as strong. Were you guys applying from out of state?
I’m in Buffalo. Well, just outside, but close enough.
Unfortunately, I believe connections played a major role.
@ggawlak Outside of state. SAT: 2310. Prior research experience last summer and this school year. 4.0 GPA. Would be entering the program with 8 AP’s done. Started my own science-based club. Decent awards except for just a few in the science department. I read my recs and they were both fine. I personally thought my essay was very general-but I mean…300 words only so…- maybe that was it?
I just really want to get into one of my other programs.
Yeah, I feel you. Your stats look amazing and I find it incredulous that you were waitlisted. Given that there are only ~25-30 spots, I’d say the majority are based on connections.
I’m not certain about that. I was somewhat “connected” (my dad has a cousin who works there, the program director is from my hometown, and I’ve been volunteering with Roswell’s youth program, which put in a good word for me)), and I still got wait listed. My GPA is 4.0 and I am top ranked in my class, but unfortunately, due to my school’s tiny size, I didn’t have the AP classes (my school only offers one in the sciences, AP Bio, which I am taking next year) or clubs/awards that other, larger schools could offer. My SAT score is also a bit low, though I do intend to take it again. Sure would love to see who DID make it.
Forgot to say sam that your credentials are awesome! So sorry you didn’t make it either.
On the application I think there was space to put major science fair awards if you kept on clicking yes for research experience, project, etc. The ones that made it maybe were previous Siemens/Intel semifinalists and winners? I didn’t have anything like that unfortunately. Either way, I’m sure the ones who made it were very well-qualified and deserve it. Oh well, I hope all of us find quality things to do this summer!
See, that’s what ticks me off … My tiny rural school doesn’t do science fairs or things like that. If that’s the qualifier, then it’s a huge disadvantage. I did the best I could with the limited resources we have: I doubled up on science classes so I am a year ahead now, and sought out my own job shadowing experience last summer with a professor at the University at Buffalo. My school offers just one AP science class, which I’ll take next year. I can almost guarantee there’s at least one or two City Honors kids in there.
