ROTC factor in admissions?

Does applying ROTC improve your chances of being admitted to a university?

The schools our son applied to did not take ROTC into account. I’m sure that some schools may, however. I know that when we looked into Yale they have a separate review process for ROTC applicants but don’t know if that improved the chance for admission.

Thanks for your reply. Any idea where to find that information at a glance instead of going school by school? I think having a separate review process must be an advantage for kids who are a good ROTC fit.

No. It isn’t standardized and sometimes the discussion of acceptance is based on the relationship the ROO has within the school.

The liaison person for ROTC usually has to answer that question to prospective candidates, and as I recall, it is not a factor in admissions for most, if not all of the lower admit rate schools. You still need to be a fit without it, especially since the schools know that you can easily drop out of ROTC.

Hopefully schools can take into account IF an applicant has earned the national ROTC scholarship, had the scholarship placed at their perspective # 1 choice, while meeting said school’s admission (academics, ECs, sports, music, etc…) criteria…

It’s true that a ROTC student can opt out, after gaining admission and starting their ROTC journey, but I would like to believe that an ROTC applicant has the noble goal to serve, upon completion of their 4 year degree.
