ROTC scholarship

Hey I’m a rising senior and I’m strongly considering army rotc. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if I stand any kind of chance at getting an ROTC scholarship. My gpa is a 3.88 however my SAT score is low at an 1130 (I’m retaking though) I have 5 varsity letters. I was team captain my junior year. I am in multiple honor societies and I’m the head lifeguard at my job(leadership). I don’t know my stats for PT test yet though…I really have no idea how competitive it is so any advice at all would be really helpful! Thanks!

ROTC scholarships are generally considered very competitive, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t apply.

Thanks

ROTC in which branch of the service? What major? It makes a huge difference.

You need to bring your SAT score way up! Have you tried the ACT?

What is your goal?

Also you are bordering on being late to start the process. The earlier you get your app in and your officer interview completed the more review boards your app will go to. Early apps also are looked at more favorably because it shows you want to be an officer. People that wait are looked upon as being unsure and their apps are reviewed with that in mind. It’s not all stats. Your essay and officer interview are very important. That having been said if you don’t have the stats you won’t get past gate one.

Ignore the published minimums. These are some of the most competitive scholarships in the country. My DS had his app submitted and his officer interview completed by the end of August before his Sr year.

You are probably qualified (meet min standards) and your leadership is good so I think you have a shot, a very good shot if you could raise your SAT like the other posters have mentioned. Varsity team captain is your strongest point right now.

some stats from a few years ago for AFROTC which will be slightly more competitive:

  • Nationally, over 13,000 high school seniors applied for AFROTC scholarships for Fall ’12 start
  • -- 4,825 met minimum standards to be interviewed and then evaluated by a central scholarship board
  • -- 1,449 (30%) were offered scholarships
  • * * --- 77 Type 1 offers; 5% of total offers; avg 1440 on SAT reading/math or 33 on ACT
  • * * --- 216 Type 2 offers; 15 % of total offers; avg 1360 on SAT reading/math or 31 on ACT
  • * * --- 1,156 Type 7 offers; 80% of total offers; avg 1280 on SAT reading/math or 29 on ACT

stats from Army ROTC scholarships in 2010 which I’ll say that its a little more competitive now:

The profile of this year’s scholarship winners shows that the average high school grade-point average was 3.5, and the mean college board test score was 1186.

In addition: 39 percent were in the top 5 percent of their classes; 74 percent were in the top 25 percent of their classes; and 96 percent were in the top 50 percent of their classes.

About 12 percent were student-body or senior-class presidents; 34 percent held other class offices; 41 percent were National Honor Society members; 8 percent were club presidents; 28 percent took part in Junior ROTC; 17 percent were involved in Scouting; 77 percent were varsity-letter winners; and 53 percent were varsity team captains.

Wow, thank you for all the information I really appreciate it. I am planning on applying army. I will be taking the SAT again this Saturday and I’m aiming for right above a 1200.

Thanks you so much for all the info. I am trying rly hard to raise my SAT. Thanks for relaying all the stats

Why do you want the scholarship? What is your intended major?
