ROTC vs. West Point

<p>Hi All -</p>

<p>I know it has been some time since I last posted, but I wanted to start a new thread for those who are debating ROTC vs. West Point. I was at West Point (c/o '09) for much of CBT until, due to some family circumstances and a heat casualty (too much all at once, I suppose), I chose to come home. Now I am a contracted ROTC cadet and would be more than willing to share any and all of my experiences. Please feel free to ask me anything you'd like!</p>

<p>As far as being in the rotc program and wanting to re-apply to USMA, do you have to retake the SATs and receive another congressional nomination?</p>

<p>Well, you do not need a congressional nomination Per Se...you can get one through your PMS. However, you may still apply for a congressional, and receiving one would assuredly make you look better to the admissions board. I think the deciding factor here is if you are a Contracted vs. Non-contracted ROTC cadet. If you were contracted, it'd be through the PMS, if non-contracted, you'd go through congressional. As far as taking your SAT again, no, I believe once you are already in college it would be a moot point to take a college admissions test again, I think once you're in they'd look heavily on your performance in the college classes you've taken to see how academically prepared you are for the challenges of USMA.</p>

<p>Regarding retaking the SAT...If your scores are under 600 you should probably retake the test. You want the best possible scores when you reapply and if you look at the stats of current and past classes you will see that most score 600 or better. This year all of the sponsored preps with scores under 600 on either part had to retake the SAT.</p>

I have never heard of this. I guess it is possible in some states. My son had to reapply for his congressional nomination. He had to do the entire nomination packet again. Also had to do the panel interview again before he was given a nomination.</p>
