Rotc

i am rising sophomore and i have some interest in joining rotc. do you guys think it is a waste of 4 years serving in the military after graduation?

don't ask what we think, it's a personal decision. If you're sitting on the fence about the military from a moral standpoint, it's not for you, if it's political, the military is politically diverse, if it's monetary, the pay aint all that great, but it does come with a lot of benefits.

What service are you looking at.

For me, yes, it would be a waste of 4 years since I have a moral obligation to let people live. For my friend going to the Naval Academy, no, it would not be a waste of time. In fact, I cannot imagine him doing anything else. He's wanted to go to the Naval Academy since he was a little kid. I have another friend who is doing ROTC at Purdue for financial reasons. His stance is that 4 years of service is worth having no college debt. It all depends on your situation.

ROTC is some of the most fun I've ever had. And besides the fun, it's prepared me in so many different ways for things I will face in life. At the end of the day it's not even so much about the military as it is about being prepared for challenges. Not to mention you get in great shape.

Joining the army or ROTC is not a bad option, killing people is not that bad, who cares.

thogh my cousin joined and got $20K sign on bonus.

Just make sure you don't enlist... non-commissioned sucks compared to commissioned

The BIG question is "do YOU think it's a waste of 4 years?" If you said "probably yes," it's likely not worth it. If you are unsure, do more research. If you said "no," ROTC might be for you.

It is a big commitment, but there are a lot of fine people who love it. The question of whether or not to do ROTC is small compared to whether or not you want to be an officer.

Keep in mind you can do ROTC with no commitment whatsoever to the military. Try it out for a semester if you're really curious and see how you like it. Worse comes to worst you'll get an easy 3 credits for trying it.

ya i think i might do air force rotc.......

6 years of my life, officer, save 200k or lots of debt

purely financial wouldnt join otherwise and definitely not enlist(especially not into the marines)

I don't reccomend doing it solely for financial reasons. D.Ranger, as long as you know what you're getting into... Good luck!

maybe purely wasnt a good word choice. of course I would like to serve my country but the prospect of getting a free education(not the stuff recruiters tell you at high school for enlisted guys) is a big motivator.

I mean it sounds like a good deal, you get a good amount of money, a free college education, a free military education which to the majority of employers is more important than any degree you could dream if, and you get to kill some arabs also, sounds like good time to me.

If you are thinking of joining because you need money for college and would like to make a difference then join the Americorp instead.

well we should PROBABLY be out of Iraq by 2009 ish or so at most so you should be fairly safe by then, unless we decide to invade Iran or N. Korea. then you're screwed.

why would he be screwed.

well under the assumption that our army is smaller than it was 5 years ago and the fact that for Iraq they are calling in reservists and national guards to go.. if we were to invade Iran(which I actually deep down doubt it) they'll basically call everyone in, yet I dont' know what type of rotc he's signing up for so nm.

you and everybody should be honored if called upon to go to war.

yea it is a real honor to get your legs blown off for a bull crap war

first of all I support the war 100% and I think it is 100% necessary. while it may not be a honor to get your legs blown off, it needs to happen. It just happens the majority of Americans are [wimps].

leaving iraq now is far worse for the people of iraq than if we stayed

meh, i really dont think so...i mean put it this way if we had never invaded there would probably be about (very rough estimate) 100k more Iraqis still alive. dont' even deny it. yes there might have been some pretty bad hardships under saddam but man if you lived in Iraq like now you'd probably be wishing for when saddam was back in power because it just sucks right now. but it is kind of nice to see saddam gone. plain and simple, the war was handled extremely poorly.
i actually think waiting for saddam to die and then staging a coup would have been more effective.
