Is it a bad idea to buy a round trip flight with return for say, Dec. 22 (the last day of finals) since we aren't even sure when our finals are for each class? It's SO much cheaper to buy round trip than one way.

And...any recommendations for cheap flights? I'm trying to book and I'm finding crazy high prices.

i just bought a round trip flight a day ago for the 22nd and i hope it wasnt a mistake...but i got my tickets from continental airlines and they were reasonably priced. use www.kayak.com to find your tickets, IMO they find the cheapest tickets.

Depeding on your major you may not want to buy flights home yet. If your pre-med or in Stern finals may run up to December 30th. NYU is notorious for making you fly home on Christmas Eve. Also, the most fun time of year is right after your done with finals and can enjoy the city again, so you may want to give yourself a day or two to have fun with your friends since you won't see them for about a month.

well we are all in MAP courses this year so it should be pretty structured right? Also, will a teacher work with you if you have already booked a flight out?

Don't count on any profs accomodating you because of a flight home. It's your responsibility to be available for exams when they're scheduled to be taken. Don't be booking flights til you know your exam schedule, unless it's a ticket you're able to change.
