Router

OK.. I'm living in Couzens and they wouldnt give me a hub because we have two ethernet jacks. But I need to get my XBOX plugged into the network.... I have a n old wired router.. it says Residential Gateway.. Are these allowed? How do I register it?

Go to the comp that is registered. Start-> RUn. Type in cmd. hit enter. go to where it says physical address. its a six digit # with dashes, write it down

access your router configuration page (192.168.1.1, 191.168.2.1, etc, you should know this)

there should be an option to change the routers MAC. Change it to the comp's one that you wrote down.

Some routers have a MAC clone ability. With this feature, you just hook your comp that is registered into the router, access the admin page, and 'clone' the mac address.

And BAM, you gots interweb for xbox l!ve

hmm, but are routers allowable in the dorms? this cant be detected

Undetectable. In addition, according to people on this forum, they don't check either.

I can't find my MAC ? How do I find it? your directions seem a bit unclear. Thanks

Depends on the router. Check the router's manual.

I am supposed to find the MAC of my PC also right?

I tried all that... and it didnt work.

Anyone know how I can make this work?

you need to follow epsilon's advice, except he missed a step. Once you open the command prompt, either by typing cmd in the "Run" menu or by finding "Command Prompt" under all programs, type "ipconfig /all" without the quotes. This is where you'll find your MAC address. If you're on a notebook it might list one for both your wireless and your wired adapters, but my guess is that you used a wired connection to register in the first place, so you'll want to find your ethernet (wired) address and copy that down.

Then you need to open your router's configuration page, as epsilon said, by opening your browser and typing in 192.168.1.1 (for some linksys) or 192.168.x.x for whatever brand you have (consult the manual or look it up on the manufacturer's website). Then you need to find an option that probably says "MAC address clone" or something similiar... anyway, you need to find the place where you can either manually change the router's mac addy or clone your PC's... if you manually change it you're just going to use your PC's addy anyway that you copied down so if you have the clone option you might as well use it. This makes your router have the same mac address as your pc, thus UofM allows it on the network and anything behind the router can freely connect without registering its mac address (i'm fairly certain).

If you can't get it to work (can't find the router config page, can't find the mac address clone, etc) let us know what router (brand and model you have).

PS... I'm in Couzen's too. You're probably my neighbor and we don't even know it.

I had my MAC and I cloned the MAC on the router, and all that. I think I did everything right. It just isnt connecting. I have an old DLink Router, DL 604... reaaalllly old. But it should still work. What floor are you on?

hmm... 4500's

Hook everything up through the router and then go to nr.housing.umich.edu and register. There is no need to change mac addresses unless you've registered two computers already.
