I just remembered that when someone was showing us around his room in Dav, he said we should get a router to have wireless Internet (and I think he said most people in Dav had one). I don't know if these are technically allowed, but I was wondering if a lot of upperclassmen use routers. I'm just thinking that I won't be able to go online on my iPod Touch without one.

I’m not an upperclassman (freshman), but I know for sure that NEU changed their policies about routers, allowing them in the residence halls that don’t already have NUwave (Kennedy, where i’m staying). Not sure if Dav is already wireless though.

I’d be miserable without a router cause I have a lot of wireless devices myself (PS3, Macbook, iphone, etc…)

There’s more info here about their policies and setup info.

Thanks! Yeah Dav’s def nit wireless (I think IV might be the only wireless dorm so I was pretty spoiled last year haha).

Yeah definitely get a wireless router on-campus. The new rules make everything much easier to deal with ResNet and routers. Make sure you talk to your roommates to see if anybody has one before shelling out like $50 for one though.

Yeah I’m def gonna bring it up with them. I’m not the most tech-savvy person-- will one router be able to handle 5 laptops + various other devices (like my iPod Touch)?

If you don’t use them all at the exact same time you should be good.

Do note that some PCs running Windows 7 can actually be used as wireless routers assuming you have a compatible wireless card. If you have any computers running Windows 7 I recommend you try this out. I purchased my computer in November 2007, and my wireless card was still compatible with this feature, so its quite possible any computer you have will be able to be used as such. You’ll just have to plug that computer into the ethernet port in your room, and download software to set up the network.

Actually you don’t even need software or Windows 7. I’ve turned my laptop into a wireless router and it was an HP running Windows XP. Just follow these instructions.

Thanks for the info-- I have a Dell running Windows 7 so I’ll def look into that!

Another question-- my roommate and I couldn’t get our printer to work wirelessly last year in IV so do you think it might be able to if we have our own router?
