I got accepted!!
I want to possibly change my major from bio to electrical/computer engineering
I’m planning to go to medical school
I’ve been doing some heavy thinking and this is pretty much the school I want to attend

elec/comp engineering is VERY competitive. They don’t have a lot of spots but they do take some extra because it is hard and they know some will drop out. Hope you are amazing at math and chem because the first year is tough. Also, I don’t think you will be able to switch into it later, I think you need to be in that program from the start. Better check it now if you were accepted into a different major. My neighbor is in the program.

th3fall…I just saw your SAT on your old posts. Better call Rowan for sure. I’m pretty sure that major required a 700 math SAT. I think I remember he needed at least a 1700. He was in NHS and top 10% in a big school, probably around a 4.0 and he was not guaranteed.

I just wanted to tell you this because if you go there with your heart set on switching majors you might be disappointed.

does the business major (accounting) happen to have a min. SAT too?

Not that I know of. You do have to pass Calculus to be a business major. That kept S1 out of the School of Business. I’m not sure that you apply straight to a business major or enter into it at some point. You could always start as liberal arts and then transfer to business. Undecided might be a good way to go! You could also call the admissions office and ask them. Education is another fairly competitive major to get into.

This is from collegeboard.com and refers to transfer students, but gives you an idea of which majors are harder to get into. “2.5 GPA required for business, nursing, communications, education and psychology. Engineering requires 3.0 GPA and specific courses.”

Those scores don’t even guarantee a transfer is accepted. You can see that engineering is the toughest.

I was told that they like to see at least a 3.0 and 1070 (I think it was that).

Jason, you might be waiting a little while while they see how the other apps look. The deadline isn’t until 3/1. You are in the ballpark, but not sure if it matter whether you applied as bus major or something else.

Oooh, I just found this. “Our Business program attracts high-achieving students whose SAT I scores are above the Rowan mean” You might want to call and see if it matters if you choose to start in a different major on your app, if your SAT’s are a little weak.
That info was hard to find…[Rohrer College of Business @ Rowan University](<a href=“William G. Rohrer College of Business | College of Business | Rowan University”>William G. Rohrer College of Business | College of Business | Rowan University)

Appreciate all that research! That cleared a lot of things up. Unfortunately i didnt take a calculus course in high school, only up to pre calc and i’m currently taking AP Statistics as a senior. Does that mean that im automatically out of admission consideration? This is kind of freaking me out haha

Jason, no, you just have to take it in college before you will be admitted to the school of business. Not sure how it works as a freshman. They will require math placement test and I assume that if you are accepted you will be advised that you have to take Calc before you are in the school of business. I don’t know if they consider your app any differently depending on what major you apply for. You really should call and ask them if it is more competitive if you apply to certain majors. You might want to apply as lib arts and transfer to business. I only know most of this because my son got his AS of Business at Comm College hoping to transfer into the business school and they said he has to take calc. He could get in Rowan, but wouldn’t be an official business major without it. He never did the calc! He took this program instead business/crim justice.

Just got accepted into Rowan University today! Thanks for the heads up njfootball. :)

That’s great! Did they put you in the engineering program and if so, which one? The one my neighbor is in is computer/electrical. It’s one of the hardest. The chem and calc are deadly (I think his were advanced). If you have to take those you better plan on working VERY hard. He took honors calc in HS and still had trouble. You would probably start in a different calc though.

Good luck! Also, use ratemyprofessors.com. Neighbor mentioned there were 2 teachers for calc (the one he took) and one is worse than the other.

Jason: I agree with njfootballmom. You might want to apply as a “undeclared” or “general studies” major. Once in, talk to your advisor about your plans. Your first year or so is mostly general studies anyway, so ask for the advisor for guidance on the obtaining the requisites for a business degree.

NJfootballMom - I’m a Rowan grad from 2011 and current master’s student in engineering. The calc and Chem classes are the LEAST of his worries. Sophomore year you will take MEA 1 & 2(Math for Engineering Analysis), it’s a tricky way for you to take Linear Algebra/Calc 3/Differential Equations all in a single class for only 4 credits. Those can be make or break math classes for many students. Wait till you hit Junior year and have 8 week courses with a mid term/final and project all in 8 weeks. Oh and we have clinics which are only 2 credits, the required time to spend per week is 6 hours which gets you a C, expect to double that for something in the A range.

Ratemyprofessor will help with general math classes but you won’t have any flexibility in Engineering. What you take is the same as everyone in your major at your grade level, for example if you take “Machine Design” their is only one time/class/professor teaching it.

Not trying to scare you just giving you the facts, I saw a number of students either drop out totally, change majors, or take another year (Though not too many, I think my ME class lost like 5 people after freshman year). The good news is the college is amazing, the professor’s are fantastic. Make the best of it and treat it as a way to grow as person and academically. I couldn’t imagine going anyplace else. It sure is a ton of work, but when you grab that degree it will bar none be the proudest day of your life, I assure you.

Oh and you get to be an Engineer at Rowan, we have our own way of doing things. It’s kinda like a secret club with a fun hierarchy (For the life of me I never see a freshman in the building, sophomores and juniors stick to the general lab, seniors take the awesome thermo lab, and grad students do kinda what we want). It’s also broken down by floor, being a MechE on the 1st floor I swear I never see chemical engineers (On the 3rd), which is good since they are crazy weird MechE’s are the clear winner in terms of coolness :)

Edit: I noticed some people talking about transfers. It’s possible, but for a point of reference. I transfered in Fall 2009 and was one of about 6 transfers to Engineering, and I was the only mechanical. Needless to say transferring is generally tougher competition than getting in as a freshman. Not sure about ECE but MechE program has changed that the 1st year dives right into engineering, so if you miss those classes expect to make it up with independent study if they let you (Doing extra project for those credits), or you’ll be a year behind (Classes are offered once per year).
