Rowan forEngineering....WOW

My S was accepted and offered 12.5 a year in Merit and Scholarships. We visited Rowan and he liked it. Then today Rowan sends a letter saying his 12.5 was raised to 20k a year!
Some good schools for Engineering like TCNJ and Rose Hulman will be hard pressed to compete at 30-35 a year at their tuition costs with room and board.

Rowan will be tough to beat.

My son got the same scholarship and is completing his first year at Rowan now in MechE . He loves it and the experience he is getting is unbelievable!

Wow, that’s great. My son is interested in going there for engineering or computer science. What was your sons GPA and SAT scores that he got such a nice scholarship? What did he like about Rowan for engineering? Did they talk about internship or co-op opportunities?
Thanks for any info…

ACT 33, SAT 2120 (780 Math, 640 CR, 700 Writing)
GPA 4.2 weighted / 3.8 unweighted
He received 21.8K a year from Rowan
He liked the feel of the campus, students, and professors, the hands on learning and cutting edge facilities and technologies, the small classrooms, all taught by professors, no TAs, and the cost of course. There are certainly opportunities for internships. My son landed a research internship this summer at VA Tech.

IMO…Rowan tops TCNJ for engineering by a long shot. Be sure to sit in a classroom and observe, not just take a tour.

Check out my old post, “Why Rowan?”. It’s held up. Son graduates in May with a CEE major. Last summer, he worked on beach replenishments, just in time for Sandy.

In HS, he was #3 or 4/500, 2100 SAT (just one try), 700 across the board. Still, he’s been challenged at Rowan. Gave up varsity soccer (he still plays interscholastically on the club team) to concentrate on studies and other activities. He’s very active. Hardly ever in his dorm or apartment, from what his buddies tell me. In a lab, on a field, or in the Rec Center most of the time.

It’s a place to DO.

My daughter has also been accepted to Rowan as a Chem E. She was offered a nice merit package and then it was bumped to $29000/year. We were stunned. She is first in her class and did well on all her testing. She had her heart set on Lafayette and was awarded a Marquis scholarship, but when you start at $60000, a $20000 award doesn’t go too far. Our biggest worry is what if she decides she would rather be in a different eng program? They say you can only transfer depts if there is an opening. But in our minds, how can we say no to that much money!

WMA630-congratulations to your daughter. That’s a great offer. It’s hard to say no to. I hope whatever she decides to do she’s happy!

For those of you who got merit aid, are you NJ residents or out of state if you don’t mind answering.

My daughter is a PA resident. At a recent accepted student day she was the only one! We’re only 45 minutes away! She was surprised.

Thanks! We’re really hoping she’ll choose Rowan, although she had her heart set on Lafayette. I just can’t justify all the loans she will need to go there.

Wow…what incredible scholarships! We are planning to check out Rowan for our junior son. May I ask…where the schlorships increased after accepting the first offer or did it just follow randomly as extra enticement? Congratulations!!

I wonder why they bump it up and not just give you their expected amount for the scholarship. But seems like an effective recruiting strategy. Congrats.

The original merit money came with the acceptance letter. About a week or so later the letter saying additional funds had become available and they were giving additional monies to their top admitted students. We had not accepted admissions to the school yet.

just visited this past sunday with my son, we really liked what the school has as far as academics, sports and ammenities. Can anyone tell me what the school is like socially? We were there from 10:00am to 2pm on a Sunday and you could hear a pin drop on campus. Is this the norm? Do most kids stay on the weekends or is it a suitcase school? the price and the stats of the school as well as the distance from home, (90mins) fit my son perfectly, this was our only concern. thanks in advance!

We visited this weekend (Saturday April 13th) and there seemed to be a lot going on.
My brother goes to TCNJ and comes home every weekend. Most of the kids go home.
However his friend goes to Rowan and only goes home once or twice a month.
We met up with him on the tour and he had a lot of plans for the weekend at school.
Try going back on another day since you live pretty close by.
I’m also looking for a school with a good social life and I think Rowan is better that most of the schools in New Jersey as far as that goes.
I was impressed with the school overall.
Good luck with your decision :)

WMA630: I’m gonna whisper this because I’m just an observer, not anyone in a decision-making position…

You said that you have a “daughter”, which means that she is a “woman in engineering”. If she demonstrates that she brings something to the table and is otherwise enjoyable in the classroom and a credit to the human race, there is a lot that can be done. Especially in switching disciplines within engineering.

At Rowan, you are dealing with a professor, not a student assistant. They can and do pull strings. Just have D go into her advisor’s office (they will be there), spill her guts, and they will help.

I wouldn’t sweat it much beyond normal parental sweating.

Lefty: There are a lot of commuters as well as residents at Rowan. I’ve been to many colleges, and quiet from 10 AM to 2 PM Sunday might be an indicator of an ACTIVE social scene, if you know what I’m sayin’. It could also mean that everyone was at Church.

Lefty: Following up to a previous post…

This past Saturday was Field Day at Rowan. Sort of like a big company picnic with games & competitions (tug-o’-war, etc.). After that, there were celebrations. I know, since the weather was nice, of some students heading for the shore for the day on Sunday for sun & fun or job-searching.

The previous Saturday was Profstock, a concert event featuring some name-brand acts. This weekend, it’s the musical “Guys and Dolls” at the theatre. Sunday is Little Siblings Day.

There are all kinds of activities during the week, usually involving clubs and intramurals. There is no lack of things to do or people to do them with.

SpacemanEd, I appreciate the info! My daughter does bring a lot to the table so that’s good to know! I wrote the deposit check today, so Rowan it is!! Just couldn’t see turning down all that cash!!

Way to go! Hope she has a great time, gets involved, and you have fun visiting. The 7-Star Diner, 5-7 minutes north, at the fork of routes 47 & 41, is my new go-to place while visiting. The kids also like the Samurai sushi place on Delsea Drive for a change of pace.

Don’t think it will be cake like HS; she’ll be challenged and work hard. You can always blow the cash on grad school.
