Rowing/Crew

I know NYU is a Division 3 school so they have a D3 Women's rowing team, but are there any other competitive rowing programs that would be open to college students in the NYC area?

As a male rower on the team (we’ve got both a men’s and women’s team, even if it’s a club sport), myself, I would say the team is great, but if you desperately needed something “greater” in your mind, try contacting Row New York, they’re up on the Harlem River from the Peter Sharp Boathouse, but note - you have to be quite good to be accepted.

Sorry, no, they don’t.
NYU’s Women’s Crew is a club team, not Div III:

Not exactly sure how you are defining “NYC area” but here are colleges located within fifty miles of midtown Manhattan that have varsity women’s crew teams (Div. I and Div. III):

Columbia
Dowling
Fairfield
Fordham
Iona
Princeton
Rutgers
Sacred Heart
Sarah Lawrence
SUNY Maritime

O/P,

No response? Still interested in rowing?

Hi, I read your conversation whilst investigating US uni crews and would love any advice. I’m 17 and a new girl rower from England, I’ve only been rowing 6 months and currently pull a 2K of 7.48 mins. I’ve been in an eight at Henley and National Schools championships and also got a silver medal in a National regatta in Belgium in a double a couple of months ago to name a few. I love this sport and hopefully will be able to row in the states in a uni crew. I was just wondering what sort of standard do you need to be at to row at that level? And what are the divisions about? What’s the difference between a Division 3 School and a Club Team? Thanks

If you love to row, want to step up to D-1 competition and still want the NYC experience with top academics, you have Columbia (Ivy league) and Fordham (Patriot league/Atlantic 10). I think either will give you an excellent education while living in NYC and a stronger level of rowing experience. Both also offer more of a “College campus” feel than does NYU so may be worth a look.

RamRay,

Different person asking, not the O/P.
No connection to NYU or New York City.

Wow, ukrowergirl, that is a very large topic to cover here.
I’m sure if you search on the Internet you will get a lot of the info you are looking for. But here are the very basics.

A college sports team (not including intramurals) can either be a supported varsity team or a non-supported club team.

Club teams generally do not get funding directly from the school’s athletic department and are self-run by the students. Some club teams are extremely competitive.

For college-supported varsity teams, there are three levels, called “divisions.”
Division I and II are allowed to offer athletic scholarships, Division III schools do not.

As far as your 2k erg score goes, there are many, many Internet sites and postings claiming what the minimum performance standards are. I used to take these as gospel but while now currently going through this with my daughter, I’m finding that it is a lot more complicated. Also, you didn’t mention if you are a Lightweight or Openweight.

Let’s just say that a less than 7:20 time gets you in a Division I program. Everything else is up to interpretation and circumstances. Create an online profile, contact some coaches and see what happens.

Godfather;
FYI my response was to the O/P

BTW you provided very good info for ukrowergirl. Dare I guess you are a crew coach?

No, sorry, I’m not. Just a parent of a high school rower.
Three or four years ago I probably never even heard of the word “crew.” ;)

But I have most likely read every book and online article on the subject. Plus I have had the very good fortune to learn a lot from other members of this forum, both in various public threads as well as in many private one-on-one conversations.

In addition, I’ve been very lucky and had the opportunity to personally pick the brains of a couple of extremely successful college coaches and high school coaches.

And lastly, my daughter is currently going through the recruiting process. Which has been an education in itself!

To ukrowergirl:

Use the search function and you can gain some great info here at CC. The rower community on this board is great. Are you a Junior or a Senior in high school?
