Rowing for Brown U?

Hello CC’ers,

I posted this question on the transfer student board, but thought I should post it here too, since Brown is my first choice

"Hello CC’ers!

I would like to transfer into a four year institution in my Junior year(top choices are Brown, Columbia GS, and Cornell). I would also like to row crew for these schools, but I have no rowing experience whatsoever. Could I still join the team and train, or is there just no chance of training/joining the crew team as a transfer student with no experience?

Any answers are greatly appreciated!

Thank you :)"

I really love the Brown culture, and I have taken quite a keen interest in rowing over the past months for some reason. I go to a Community College, and we don’t have a Crew team (I may just get like the Winklevii and start my own haha).

Like the quote says, any answers will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you :)

I am going to be rowing for the women’s team next year, but I assume the protocol is similar. It’s not unheard of for people with no experience to make good teams, but it usually only happens if you have the right build for rowing and you can learn quickly. Your best bet is to just email the coach and tell them that you are interested and what your stats are (height, weight, fitness etc). They get emails like that all the time from prospective rowers and recruits, and, if it is the same in men’s and women’s rowing, they will be responsive. I hear that the men’s team is cool so you should definitely try. Also, just say ‘row’ or ‘do crew’, ‘row crew’ is a dead give away of inexperience :)

The teams take on quite a few walk-ons. I would email the coach with your interest.

I think it would be best to at least get a little experience before you start rowing. I am only a coxswein, but I know that you need to be both physically and mentally fit in order to join and do your best. Also, “row crew”? Please do some research first. :)

FWIW my girlfriend was a walk-on for Brown’s championship team, and she has in under 24 months gotten to the point where she is contributing in a meaningful way (and to the point that I doubt I’ll ever match her erg splits T_T). On the other hand, some other walk-ons haven’t had such success. As stated above, I suspect it’s similar for the guys’ teams.
