Roxbury Latin, Boston

Harvardorbust, what is an OLSAT?

I don’t know much about the OLSAT test, other than what my son tells me. It is an intelligence test, the Otis Lenon Scholastic Aptitude Test. It was 45 min in length, and there is nothing to do to prepare for it. Hope that helps.

RL parents, can you comment the decision notification? Is it by mail only? How about email?

They say March 10 is this year’s decision date. Does that mean they send it out on March 10? If so, March 11 would be the date to expect the mail.

Further, is the acceptance letter in small or big package? That would be the first indication!

Thanks, I appreciate it. What do you think RL is looking for in an applicant?

I don’t think I am qualified to comment on what they are looking for, other than what I have read on their website, and here on these forums. Whatever they do, they must be doing a very good job. Can’t really argue with 365 years of strong history.

I’ll definitely post feedback on our thoughts if he gets in and also if he does not.

hob

Good Luck to all. We have bitten off all our nails on this. It is a dreadful wait.

I have been following the Roxbury Latin thread(s). HOB, I understand you are from the NY area. What are some of the other schools you are looking at?
Kei, what were your son’s “hook” so to speak for RL?
I am just trying to kill some time here…
Benley, thanks for your thoughts.

I can talk story . . . darned if I know what my kid’s were, of any . . . Family is middle class by SES; we don’t run a university/biotech firm/international aid association/ professional sports team/law firm/hedge fund/surgery at a world renowned hospital, etc. never ran for statewide political office . .aren’t judges or MDs . . . no legacies at RL . . . kid top grades in 6th grade (like everyone else) . . . really good but not “top of the world” SSATs . . . Quiet kid . . . Kind kid … definitely interested in scholastic things that other kids were generally not interested in . . Musically oriented, piano since K and clarinet starting in grade 6, but not a prodigy and no regional music awards . . . All public school from an average Town (name does NOT start with a “W”) . . . our family believes that DS was selected because RL selects some kids who are bright, intellectually curious and who are actively kind people . . . and kids who they believe can handle the rigorous RL way of life . . . perhaps that’s naive, but the school does emphasize what kind of boy it wants: someone who is has high standards intellectually, morally, and spiritually . . . There was one other kid at the same 6th grade who applied, tested higher, was smarter (if chess matches are an indicator) but could be a bit pompous and full of his own excellence, and it’s our family myth that the other kid was not admitted because RL identified that issue and based its admission decision in part upon that part of the kid’s character

RL’s attitude about being kind to others is quite different than others schools . . When we asked “what do you do about cliques” other schools talked about their inclusionary programs and so forth; RL said “we break them up” . . . Not that they can succeed, but they try to identify when there is exclusionary and/or mean spirited behavior and they act to change it . . . Early in Fall first year DS was in the gym, one of the last to shower, when the fire alarm went off, and he dutifully left the gym clad only in a towel . . . He was ribbed some about it, BUT the photog from the newspaper did not take a picture (well, the senior yearbook is still to come out so we will see about that), no junior or senior ripped the towel off his body, and - to my surprise - he was NOT christened “towel boy” for his entire academic career . . .heard later that a few adults (not all teachers) and a couple of upperclassmen intervened to curb the natural exuberance of some younger kids who did want to use that as a teasing moment

Who knows why some are admitted and some not . . . We do feel blessed and I am still full of wonder that my child was accepted there and that he was accepted in the first place

Anyway, good luck this week and good luck keeping the heebie-jeebies in check as the waiting goes on!!!

Kei

Kei,
Thank you so much for your thoughts and effort in your reply. The story about your son, is quite touching. He sounds like a really nice kid, and I am so glad to hear that the incident didn’t become a horrible moment for him.

Thanks for that info Kei. Your son sounds very similar to ours. You have been a wealth of information to us. Not much is available otherwise, surprising, given the schools age!

Tomorrow is the big day + wait time for the mail. Just hoping for good news…

hob

Gladtobehere: we are only applying to RL and nowhere else.

Good luck, HOB!

How do you find out the results? Is it only by mail or do they email or call?

Update: I asked my now senior child if the towel episode was ever mentioned, and he said yes, every so often, in a mildly teasing elliptical way.

Shows what parents know!!

For us - and more recently - they only use the US mail. They only use regular mail.

Good luck!!!

Kei

Thanks everyone, for your wishes! Much appreciated.

Our fate now rests in the hands of the US postal service!

Thanks everyone! Good luck HOB and others! Have you noticed that you can now spot the mail truck way down the street, and that you see them everywhere!

Has anybody received anything from Roxbury?? Any Selections or Rejectionr or Even Waitlist?? It is endless wait.

DS read the acceptance letter and he got in RL. The waiting game is over. It has been a long journey starting from last spring. I learned a lot from the CC postings so thank all for previous contributions. Good luck to all who are still waiting to hear from RL.

Newtoblock,

Great to hear. Congratulations!!!

WHen did you get the letter and was it priority or snail Mail?? We live in Midwest. Do you live in Boston Area?

Thanks in advance for sharing info.

Star–If you’re from the midwest it will probably get there by Tuesday, the latest, would be my guess.

We got the RL acceptance via snail-mail. However, we live in metrowest Boston within 30 miles away so one day arrival was what we had hoped for. Good luck Star007.
