We are hoping that our son will be admitted to Roxbury Latin for next year. He is in sixth grade, an interesting kid with good grades and many different kids of activities.
He didn’t do exceptionally well on the ISEE, though. 95th percentile on one section, but only high 70s on the others. I wonder if those scores are just too low.
If yes, will he be accepted to Boston Latin? I am realizing that decisions will be out next week but it seems a long time to wait.
Roxbury Latin seems to be in a class by itself. It seems they are looking for a certain type of boy and are very good at evaluating “fit”. Many schools say they care as much about character as academics, but Roxbury Latin walks the walk in this area. We have family members who attend there, and for those who are lucky enough to be admitted it is a truly a unique and precious education (for the right boy). There are no cut off scores for test scores, but I do know of admittance with high 80s, low 90s SSAT.
I don’t know SSAT of ISEE scores for all these boys, but it is a small acceptance rate and I know many who didn’t get in. But some did and are happy there. Some spots are held for kids who live in Boston. Most of the boys I know who were accepted had some connection to the school. I agree with the pp that they are looking for certain fit.
our son was waitlisted at all 4 schools he applied (RL, St Sebs, Nobles, Belmont Hill). As tough as the process has been, we were hoping for some resolution today, but I guess not! We were fully prepared to adopt the “love the school that loves you” mantra, but looks like the waiting game is just beginning. Good luck @ongoingcaralarm
I assume acceptance is a long shot, as I know their yield is generally very high. Our son has a good back up school so we are in a good position.
I thought we would be disappointed, but strangely enough, we are not at all. We figured him to be a good candidate for RL, but admission is so very competitive we knew realistically it was a long shot.
Good luck to you, @DavidRoman! Just when you think the waiting is over, it begins again.
@ongoingcaralarm I suspect acceptance is indeed a long-shot, not to sound depressing but just to be realistic. However, the boy that gave us our tour during the RL visit got in off the waitlist, so it does happen! Best of luck to you whatever happens, and it’s great that you have another school that you are happy with… a situation we don’t have yet. St Sebs was our “safety school” and were a little surprised he didn’t get in. It really is hard to predict. Let us know where your son ends up going!
We’ve also been stressing to our son that it is an accomplishment to get on the wait list - part of that is spin in case he is feeling a little bruised by the strenuous and stressful process, but I also do mean that sincerely. It’s enormously and increasingly competitive and that your son and mine got on the wait list is something we should be proud of!
