Hi,
I am a high school senior getting really nervous about RPI acceptance. I applied regular decision and it is my number 1 school. When do they typically notify reg decision? Also do I stand a chance? I was accepted to embry riddle, drexel, and penn state u-park. I have a bunch of extra curriculars, 3.9 gpa unweighted. One thing I am particularly nervous about are my sat scores. I have scored 610 M 490 CR. Will this drag me down? I am in AP calc, AP Physics, and AP English. I earned the RPI Medal, and completed the candidates choice application. Am I doomed?

Please give your insight.
Sincerely
Nervous Applicant

Hi there Nervous Applicant!
I applied ED to RPI as it was also my #1 school and got in. From the accepted students website, an admissions counselor said RD notifications get sent out in mid-March.

Speaking for my GPA compared to yours, well I definitely don’t have quite so high of an unweighted GPA. But it also depends on course load. Did you get a 3.9 unweighted by taking a lot of regular level classes (at my school, they are typically referred to as CP level which I believe stands for college preparatory) or did you take mostly honors/AP classes?

Using Naviance as my source (don’t know if you’re school uses Naviance, but basically it’s a website where you can log on and see the national admissions info for schools and also you’re statistics compared to those of other kids from your school who have applied to that school), your CR seems on the low end. Have you taken the ACT as well? Speaking from personal experience, I did significantly better on the ACT than I did on the SAT. I never took the ACT with writing so I still had to submit both scores to RPI, but I’m sure it helped.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with my admissions decision, but I ended up getting in! My GPA wasn’t as good (okay fine, I had a 3.1 unweighted and about 3.9 weighted) with a heavily AP course load, and slightly better SAT scores. I don’t have tons of extra curricular activities like some of the kids I know, but I do have some (3 clubs and a heavy interest in aviation if you wanna call that one). I would say we are probably similar candidates from my limited knowledge, so I would say you have a good chance at getting in! Hope to see you at RPI in the fall! Good luck!

I actually wrote my essay for RPI about Micro$oft Flight Simulator. I’ve loved aviation as long as I can remember, and I’ve pretty much known I’ve wanted to do aerospace engineering since I was like 9. I had my English department coordinator who is also my teacher this year tell me I had to take creative writing 2nd semester this year after he read my essay. I think that helped too. And on the part of the application about “how did you become interested in RPI”, I even talked about the Keurig coffee brewer in the admissions office where there was an info session before the tour. I knew when I finished the tour that I wanted to go to RPI, but I also knew that when I remembered the keurig coffee brewer 6 months after I took the tour, it was the right school for me. I couldn’t tell you anything like that about any of the other schools I visited.

Call the admissions office. I applied Early Decision II and just got my acceptance. The week leading up the the decision was the worst of my life because I really want to go to RPI. Like you I got into Drexel and it was my fall back. Anyway, I was so nervous that I wouldn’t get in and it was ruining my week (I had mid-terms the next week). So I called admissions to ask about what was going on. They can’t tell you exactly if you got in but the woman I spoke to informed me that they had all my forms and that there was a decision already made. She gave me the exact time on Saturday that I would be able to find out. It relieved me and then terrified me at the same time.
Back to your question, I think you should know in either late February or early March. The RPI website should also let you know. Good luck!

You received the RPI medal? It usually goes to the top math/science student in the grade, but your 610 math doesn’t reflect that, but taking AP Calc does, somewhat. I think you have a pretty good chance with the medal and your gpa and courseload, but 1100 SAT is pretty weak.

Well, Again, I took the sat 3 times in my early junior year. I am not a very good test taker. I am enrolled in AP CALC AP ENGLISH and AP PHYSICS. Currently I have a 95 in Calc, and 98 in Physics, and 92 in English. I honestly do not know how to explain it to you, I just can’t score well in those tests. Also our calc class has a history of constant 5’s for 5 years now. That is an example of the rigor involved in our curriculum

Your grades are great but those sat scores are pretty bad. I’d be inclined to think admissions cares more about grades though. Since you all seem to like airplanes so much, you should definitely consider joining Design/Build/Fly next year. Also you’ll be glad to know Boeing does a lot of recruiting here.

should’ve taken the ACT. it’s mostly for students who score high and actually study in school. the sat is more like an aptitude test and not based on how much you study.

I was admitted this December as an ED applicant, so I’m not sure how much opinion will be of value to you. Your GPA looks great, but the test scores might be more of a concern. There’s no way this forum can give you a definitive answer, but if you’re concerned, I personally would just research some states and compare. I’ve utilized those graphs on other sites that compare SAT vs GPA for admitted students, and I suggest you take a look too. I wish you luck, and hope to see you in student orientation in August!
