RPI Accepted Students Celebration

For those who went to the celebration:

HOW WAS IT? What events were there? What did you guys do? If I didnt go, did I miss out on a lot? What did they say about Student Orientation? How was the campus?

I am going next Saturday for a visit; even though there might not be anything goign on, I want to visit before making my final choice. Are there lots of students walking around on Saturdays?

oh, and how was the weather?

I think its tomorrow, saturday april 9

Weather was gorgeous the past 3 days or so.

I just got back from it. It was nice, but they really should've let the thing run til like 4 or 5pm. I got a better feel for the school when I did a campus tour and information session back in august. The accepted student celebration was really crowded! I love the school and I really think I'm gonna fit in well there. I'm probably gonna be in the class of 2009 :).

i went today, i got alot of crap from my parents for wearing shorts
he checked the weather and it said it was gonna be 40
but the weather WAS GREAT, supposedly it got better for us.
the campus was beautiful and the dorms are allright.
ok so maybe its just me, but i didntget too much out of the info sessions,
i did enjoy some of the class presentations though, so i geuss they are allright. but honestly, i hate these kinds of things cause all the people working or volunteering there have extremely biased opinions and u might not be able to get "real" answers. bjust my opinion.

Did any residence halls seem better or worse than the others?

overall review of the school?

quote

but honestly, i hate these kinds of things cause all the people working or volunteering there have extremely biased opinions and u might not be able to get "real" answers.

you want real answers, then ask me. i've said that before.

Yea the ppl who work at those things, at least at RPI, make up the biggest lies you'll ever hear. It's better to ask real students, like me, or RPIsoxFan over there.

Which dorms are the best for freshman? Do the people there actually enjoy the school? Im majoring in engineering, do enigineers have any time to have a social life, or is it all studying all the time... What do the majority of the people in the school do after a school day? i.e play video games?...Would you attend RPI again if you had the chance to choose another school>? whats the best advice you give for an upcoming frehman like me?

The Quad, though is mixed frosh/upperclassmen, i think, is awesome. It's got a touch of Ivy to its looks, and it's REALLY close to classes, unlike the rest of the frosh dorms on freshman hill. On freshman hill, Barton is the best, and the other ones are all pretty much the same-really grimy. As for BARH, it has its own dining hall, but it is REALLY far from the main campus.

Most ppl dont really enjoy being here (duh its a tech school). The workload, weather (for most of the year-really cold, and snowy), the lack of girls, and the rundown unsafe ghetto that we live in dont help things. Check the PR rankings. Over the past 3 years, we've ranked on "Professors get low marks", "Least Happy Students", "Their students never stop studying", and "College-Town relations strained". The weather got better over the past couple days, and the campus actually looked like a normal college, and not just a bunch of zombies walking around, periodically talking about math/science/engineering classes. However, I must say that I personally like this place. Academically, ppl love this place. Ppl aren't cutthroat at all. They're really smart, but not all uppity about it. They're always willing to help you out.

Engineers basically don't have that much life. They do study a whole hell of a lot (sometimes all nighters during weekdays). But ppl do try to enjoy one of the days of the weekend.

After a school day, most ppl do their homework, or play videogames, altho lots of ppl do intramurals or varsity sports (we are DIII so its not that hard to play a sport here at all).

Yes, I'd attend RPI again. It's a great place to learn science or engineering in a very supporting environment (friendly helpful ppl and small classes). The best advice I can give you is study hard, and don't let the bad sides of the place get to you. It can be depressing, socially, around these parts sometimes, but don't think too much about it. And last thing, SHAKE OFF YOUR SENIORITIS.

I don't like to study and I think I do a pretty good job avoiding it. I'm an engineer and most of the time I have a decent amount of time to do other stuff besides classes. There are some weeks where everything just sucks, a bunch of projects, a few tests etc. In general though, I play on usually two intramural sports teams each season. I'm very active in my fraternity, and I have time to drink usually both nights on the weekends, or go out to bars/parties etc.

Thanks for the indepth info on the dorms. I really liked the Quad too. They don't give a space on the form to say you'd choose this only if you get a double on floor 1 or 2 though. Do they create many triples in the Quad?
Also, they want us to rank dorm choices 1-8. Any difference in Nason, Bray, Crockett, and Cary?? And what Dining plan do most students find most useful?
Thanks a lot!

No. All four of them are the exact same thing (Nason, Bray, Crockett, and Cary). Diamond plan is great. You can eat whenever u want except after 8 PM.

There are two triples in Quad to my knowledge.

Thanks again shahmuqqadar!

I live in Cary, and I really enjoy it -- its just about the best social environment you can be in. Barton always fills up first, but to be honest, I would really regret living there because they are notoriously (especially this year) the least social hall I have seen on campus. Almost everyone keeps open door policy in Cary, while I RARELY see any open doors in Barton (its only nicer aesthetically). But hey, maybe thats the kinda thing you want...
I went with the biggest meal plan this year...I absolutely recommend late night dining as I'm a night person and its great to get food at 11pm sometimes...next year I will be switching to the no-breakfast plan however

Thanks for the input on Cary. It sounds like the spirit is great there. I put down the Quad for first choice because of location and am now wondering if this will be a good location for a Freshman. Any comments?

Since Quad is shared by freshmen and upperclassmen, the Quad is by nature a little more reserved as far as social life goes (its not that bad though). Especially at the beginning of the year, you meet most freshmen by hanging out near them -- that is, freshmen hill. Being in the Quad is closer to campus, and you get private bathrooms, but I would still prefer the hill over Quad (Cary, Bray, Hall, Nason, Crockett, etc). Living in the quad, you will tend to not eat at Commons which you'll find out is to your advantage haha

Commons sucks, Sage and BARH are much better
