RPI/AMC Physician Scientist Program (BS/MD)

It has been 5 weeks since the application dead-line. When do the first interview invitations come out? All at once or in batches? Are the interviews also done in batches (Jan, Feb, Mar)?

In a typical year: how many apply? how many are invited for interview? how many are admitted? and how many usually matriculate?

Love to hear from any current PSP students!

i heard some people got their interviews last week but I haven’t heard a thing.

I heard back and got an interview spot. Now I’m freaking out about it though.

DxSnake, did you hear via email or snail mail?

email.
From what I’ve heard, the secondaries for AMC are given in batches, not all at one.

I just heard back and got the supplemental application form. Sigh, more essays haha. oh well!

how long was it from the time that you submitted the supplemental form to when you heard if you got an interview?

Around 3 days, very quick.

is it a bad sign that it’s been about 2 weeks?

probably not, since they are now most likely getting swamped with the secondaries and need more time to look through them.

My understanding was that there are 400-500 applicants to RPI of which less than 100 get forwarded to Albany from which 40-50 may get selected for an interview with the intention of accepting up to 20. I am not 100% sure though…

From the info given at the interview, they are now trying to fill ~15 slots per program…
not 20 :’(

Can you apply to other medical schools if you attend this program? Because in your fourth year, you essentially go to med school right? I know places like Harvard med school don’t like that…

If you enter the program, you are expected to stay in the program. Whether you can deal with the Albany weather or not is a large deciding factor as well as the school.

Yes in your 4th year you are in Med School and credits earned that year are also transferred back to RPI so that you can earn your BSc degree. You may not apply to other schools. You might want to call and confirm this but I thought even taking the MCAT indicates intention to possibly move elsewhere and you may be out.

Josh is right - something to think about - you are committing to being in a certain region for the next 7 years of your life and many combined applicants at high school may not know enough to compare Med Schools at this point.

What the rules about when a student fails to meet the GPA requirement after one semester or after two semesters in a row in the physician scientist program?

I believe you get a warning first and they expect to see improvement in your grades for the next semester.
If you are worried about grades another thing you should consider is the selection of your classes in each semester. For example Bio has lecture, lab and recitation for 4 cr hrs and additional time you put in for projects etc while psychology is just lecture and also for 4 cr hours. So if you fill your semester with Bio, Chem, Physics and a math like my D did - you will be working. Next semester though she will be cruising it with only orgo to worry about.
Calculus is an A above 94% and Physics is 92% so a 91% in those classes is an A- which means your GPA just dropped to a 3.67

I am glad RPI does that in a way though, and gets them ready for rigor of Med School at Albany.
