RPI as a really far reach

Hey, I'm Matt, I'm a much lower tier student as compared to the rest of the other candidates of RPI I've seen on these forums. My ACT composite is 24, and my SAT's are bad. Not bad like some people have been considering scores in the 600s bad, but bad, as in 580 math, 460 in writing and critical reading. My GPA is around a 3.33 weighted. I rank #9 out of 18.

I don't have the opportunity to do a whole lot of community service and volunteer work. I do what I can, but I'm pretty barren in that field. I went to RPI for the STAR program, met Mike Moore (awesome guy), and James Nondorf. I also did an interview while I was there. I've fallen in love with the school, and I've applied Early Decision 2. I'm not putting all my heart into this, obviously, but if I can get in, that'd be amazing. Do you all think I have a snowball's chance?

For any record, I'm African-American, and I applied with the Candidate's Choice Application.

You should have tried to get around 1300 on the SAT (m+cr). The good thing about the SAT's is that you can actually study for them. The math portion repeats the same concepts for every test, you just have to put in the hours (which I didn't... but I got a 660)

Their weighted gpa average for incoming freshman is 3.7, mine was around 3.6 or something and I got accepted

I'm not sure if you will get in or not. If you get deferred, definitely retake the SAT's and try to get the 1300.

What type of courses are you taking right now? A really heavy schedule (and with you doing well) shows them that you like challenging yourself, I believe that is what really helped me get in with such a low gpa.

AP Calculus AB
AP Physics C: Mechanics
Chemistry 1
English
Latin 2
Spanish 3
Music History
Health

I'm getting A's in everything except English and Physics, where I have about a low B average.

I think its worth a shot, especially if you've really fallen in love with it. I would make sure you get this message across in your application.

like josh says, it depends on everything in general. RPI has as pretty lenient acceptance rate. I had a lower gpa, 3.2 unweighted, but i had a s***storm of AP classes and extracurricular activities. seeing you've already applied, there isnt much you can do now but relax and see what comes up next. i suggest you post up your stats. don't worry, there's nothing to be embarrassed about. ^__^ if you post stats, we can get a better idea of where you're at. like total number of ap/ honors, community service done, sports etc. oh and if you DO get deferred, dont give up. it means, basically a waitlist, so if you do well this year, you still have a shot!

ACT: 24

Extracurriculars:

Track Team 11th grade, won the coach's award
Fencing 11th and 12th grade
2 School musicals and 1 school play, principle role in all
received the silver medal on the National Latin Exam for Latin 1 last year

in 2005, I volunteered at a apartment building doing clerical work at an apartment building management office, and I'm in the school's Social Awareness club, which is considered volunteer work because of the nature of the club, and I was co-chair of the GLBT support group last year.

I dunno if these are extracurriculars, but I mentioned these in my essay and interview:
I've been hiking since I was 13
I've traveled Europe when I was 12 on a singing tour
skipped precalculus

You probably have a solid chance. Your SATs aren't that low, and you're a URM.

I'm guessing URM is UnderRepresented Minority, which I can't disagree with! Just wondering, what would constitute a properly represented minority?

Thanks, I feel much better about my chances! I'll post the decision when I get it.

To be honest, it's going to be a reach. That said, if the two interviews went very well, that can really boost your chances.

Best of luck, though. And be sure to keep us informed!

lol doesnt minority in general mean underrepresented? no i guess not. nvm.

You have as good a chance of getting in as many people do. I would use the essay portion of the Common App to tell your story. Some people just don't test all that well. If you have some good recommendations it should help a lot as well. Good luck!

Minority means that there are fewer people in a population. Represented means whether or not they are students at the school. For example students of Asian descent, I would assume, are still in the minority of the population at large. Perhaps they are "represented" in a larger number as students at the school.

As for women --- they are certainly not a minority in the population at large but they are most certainly underrepresented at the school.

That's my take or the definition of URM.

whoa, against pretty much all odds, I got in!!! my head is spinning!!

Wow, great job Matt!!! You now get to join the cool kids... :D

my friends (internationals) got in with:
(estimated) 3.3 gpa
no rank out of 14
a couple clubs, 2 leadership positions
sat I CR 450 / M 800 / W 550
sat II 740/740/770

(estimated) 3.5 gpa
no rank out of 14
a couple clubs, 2 leadership positions
sat I CR 500 M 700 W 600
sat I 650/750/800

full IB candidates, no aps/honors.
very limited opportunities

lol I would have to say asians are over represented minorities

Hey Matt,

You will probably get in. I had a 630 Math 510 English (White) GPA of 3.6 (Now its 3.75) and I was accepted under Early Decision II. SAT's are not everything. In matter of fact on the math section of the SAT, I got 6/9 hard questions right even though I only got in the 82 percentile (630). I am a pianist, compettitive swimmer and track and field runner, and a member of the national honor society. I came from a inner city school ...75 percent African American. Guarenteed becuase you African American you will get in...no worries. I would still bring your math up. You should be able to get a 660 atleast if you study. I took a course and got a 720 Math, 580 English....but I never performed on the actual exam...oh well. Good luck...you should have gotten some form of notice by now.

Nice...I knew you would make it!! Lets hope you can pay for it...

That makes me feel alot better! I have almost identical stats as you,
H.S. GPA : 3.0 (took 6 Honor classes, no A.P.)
College GPA : 3.4 (In Honors program at my College)
ACT : 23 Comp 25 Math
EC: Honors Program
Division 1 NAIA Soccer team
Volunteering over 200 hours helping title one schools, AIDS clinic, and Assistant coaching
H.S. Team soccer captain and MVP
African American with a EFC of about 1000
Please help!!!
Also hadv alot of other EC like TSA, SGA, And science Olympiad but did not list, Should I send them a copy of my resume or no?

Also I had a amazing story. I had a 1.7 GPA in high school and brought it up to a 3.0. My GC wrote a realli good letter for me so any ideas?
give me suggestions on other schools too plz. Tennessee resident.
I’m waiting on a decision this summer!

Cavity-

Think of it this way: Can it really hurt you to send that information in?? No. All that is actually important. Most schools these days are looking for “well rounded” students. I think I’d send it asap :)

Best of luck to you-

I already have thanks! I’m just didn’t know my chances and wad curious about that n other chooses?
