RPI Computer Questions

Current Students:
1. Estimate what percent of the previous Freshman class had the RPI computer from the Mobile Computing Program?
2. Estimate what percent of all undergraduates use the RPI computer from the Mobile Computing Program?
3. Did you get a computer from the Mobile Computing Program? Are you happy with your decision?
4. How important is having all of the software preloaded on the computers from the Mobile Computing Program?
5. How useful is the Service and Support offered on campus?

Future Students:
1. Are you planning on getting the computer from the Mobile Computing Program?

I am planning on getting the w500 from RPI. its a beast of a laptop and since its a thinkpad, the likelihood of it breaking are low. Its actually pretty cheap considering all the preloaded software on it (although you can just pirate the programs) so if you just want a laptop then getting this is a great deal too. hahaha and besides, it will be easier for your students in class and such, since in the case that he/she will need the school networking, he/she is guaranteed compatability.

Can’t speak for '12, but for '11 I’d guess about 80%.

Estimate what percent of all undergraduates use the RPI computer from the Mobile Computing Program?
Similar figures as for '11.

Did you get a computer from the Mobile Computing Program? Are you happy with your decision?
a)Yes
b) It’s okay. I think I could have gotten a better laptop (or a tablet) for the price.

How important is having all of the software preloaded on the computers from the Mobile Computing Program?
You can get all critical software for free (and legally) anyway, so there’s not much of a point in doing Mobile Computing for the software. Further, if you’re not an engineering major, chances are you won’t use a good portion of the pre-installed stuff. The only program I’ve had to use for a class thus far is Maple, and I’ve used Matlab here in there (but it wasn’t required). Aside from that (and LaTeX, which is free anyway), I don’t think I used any preinstalled software.

How useful is the Service and Support offered on campus?
I’ve had good experiences with support. I know that some people haven’t liked them, but they were fine the few times I was there and the one time we communicated via email.
