RPI Freshman Dorms

Hey, I would like to know your opinion on freshman dorms at RPI because I am filling out the preference sheet. So far I know:

Quad
-You have to go outside for laundry
-Close to classes
-You live with upperclassmen
-Small Rooms

Barton (preference)
-L Shaped Halls
-Shared and Floor Bathrooms
-Best looking
-Triples

BARH
-Further from classes
-Dining Hall close by

What else do you know so my decision is easier? Thanks!

We encouraged our two kids to go for Barton and they both thought/think it was/is great. I remember someone using a vacuum in the room next door and I couldn’t hear it at all. I (as a mom) like the study rooms. The kids also use study rooms for phone calls, video chat.

BARH will seem lots further from classes during the winter. Athletes might prefer it since near all the facilities. BARH might be triples as well.

My daughter in Barton opted for Quad next year. Closeness to better vegetarian food was one of her motivating factors, plus close to classes. She had a good lottery # to get her choice.

Depending on how you make your friends and your major, Quad could be good or bad. If you want your dorm-mates to be best friends, it might not be best choice since upperclassmen have a social life already. If you are on a team, music group, or a major like Architecture where you tend to socialize with people in the same major (not true for most engineering) then Quad may be OK.

Thank you! I am going to be a Chemical Engineering major so I won’t have a problem being friends with people in other majors. BARH will probably be low or last on my list. The “Freshman Five” will most likely be high on my list after Barton.

My daughter is a freshman living in quad. Quad is separated into stacks. In each stack the basement typically has 4 dorm rooms in a suite style arrangement and is all freshman guys. The second floor has the same 4 dorm rooms in a suite style arrangement (i.e. 2 rooms sharing a bathroom) and is all freshman girls. The 3rd floor is where the upper classmen typically are. Hopefully this helps.

-Barton is not an L-shaped hall, those are the 5 freshman dorms. They are all doubles with floor bath.
-Barton has air conditioning, i don’t know if that’s important to you or not…
-BARH has a dining hall right in the dorm
-BARH and quad get access to the closest dining hall to campus all the time, the freshman dorms are restricted from using sage dining hall 11-2 on weekdays.
-If you are a social person, I would not recommend quad, because of the way the rooms are separated in “stacks.” I personally prefer living in a hallway setup (I live in Hall Hall and I love it)

hope this helps :)

What a coincidence I was going to ask the same thing and I too am a chemical engineer haha… What are the odds?

Wow! The odds are really slim for that! That’s interesting.
