I've heard some discouraging things about the night life at RPI. Is it really as bad as I heard?

What is a night life? Clubbing? Hanging out with friends? I think there’s a generic truth at all colleges that social life is up to you to find your niche and it exists, just have to find it. True, it is not a CMU nestled into Univ of Pittsburgh city, but most serious CMU college students don’t have time for that anyway.

I wouldn’t say clubbing but certainly a social life. I have heard through the grapevine that RPI students lack in the social aspect of the college experience. I believe in the idea of “work hard play hard” and it is definitely understood that RPI students must work hard. I am just curious about the other side of life at RPI.

I can vouch they have plenty of fun, as a parent. There’s lots of types of fun to be had from skiing, hiking, sailing, flying, intramural sports, tons of music options, DJing radio station, hockey games, greek life, etc etc etc. It has one of the most active club systems in the country. The greek system is probably the most traditional party scene. Albany is nearby.

We routinely ask our son how he has time for so much fun, and with envy how he does it with such a high GPA.

He’s not a partier, rather be playing jazz or sailing or hang out with friends/girlfriend, but says if he wanted a party he could always find one.

Once again, I think it is up to the student to take responsibility for their social life and find those with common interests.

I agree with sandpit. My son is in his third year at RPI and while I know his classes keep him extremely busy, he just loves it there. He has a great group of friends, plays three intramural sports throughout the year, participates in a club and gets off campus to restaurants, concerts etc. locally or to Albany. Though my son has not pledged a frat, frats are also part of the social scene on campus even for non-members. They sponsor activities as well as parties. I really do believe one’s social life in college is what one makes of it.

There are 27 frats. There are parties if you want them. There are plenty of other things if you don’t. They show just released movies every friday/saturday for $2.50 and the ballroom team/club throws socials about 2 or 3 times a month with lessons before the dance. Those are what i usually do but most people go to frat parties and it seems we have a pretty good party scene.
Honestly, there is never a night where there is “nothing to do” even during the week.

Thank you sandpit, jdasmom, and Essie49! I’m not sure why I heard such rumors but you all have been very reassuring. I’m still waiting on my financial aid package but I will most likely attend.

Essie49 is a loser I wouldn’t listen to her She doesn’t like being tickled when she puts up her hair, what a very erotic act too.

There are always frat parties to go get drunk at if that’s your thing.
