hey guys, I'm a junior in high school planing on looking at colleges over the summer. I know I want to study engineering, either mechE or maybe some electrical (not really electronics-based though), or maybe even both, and I also know that both RPI and CMU are awesome engineering schools, but I'm not sure which one I like more. Any opinions? I do know that RPI will probably give me more money than CMU, but I don't want to base my decision on that alone. I'm interested in entrepreneurial stuff too, and kind of hope to get involved in a startup while I'm an undergrad, and then maybe switch over to get an MBA later. Thanks!

if you plan on doing an MBA, then CMU is definately the right choice because it has the Tepper School of business - which is one of the top business schools.

RPI is in Troy. Troy is a major armpit. Believe me - I spent every summer in Albany and I've been to Troy many times. CMU's location in Pittsburgh is much, much nicer.

Also, in my experience CMU has a better reputation. It's just of a higher caliber than RPI, and more selective. Also, for the MBA you definitely want CMU's business school. I know the EE and MechE programs are great. I'm going for the CS.

People put waaay too much thought about reputations of schools. Just try to find out which program and school you think you'd best fit into. RPI and CMU are both awesome in engineering so academics-wise you should be fine at either school.

CMU. And as previously noted, RPI is in Troy. Troy = bad.
