RPI or Northeastern Scholars Program?

Hi all. I've been accepted both to RPI and the University Scholars Program at Northeastern (basically a step above honors is what it should be like). I know that they're almost completely different schools (locationwise and feelwise) and I'll be visiting to see how they feel. I'd like to know more about what each school can offer me academically and in terms of finding work (that's the whole point of going to college, right?)

Right now, my interest is to study engineering, probably chemical engineering (though that's probably going to change). I heard that RPI has a better reputation in terms of engineering, but does Northeastern's enormous co-op program make up for that? Would either school give me an advantage in finding work after graduation?

I'm not sure about what the difference in opportunities for me is at the schools. Could someone who knows anything about either school please chime in? I would assume that RPI offers more to each student than Northeastern, but as I'll be in Northeastern's top program, I'm not really sure how that applies.

A final question, how hard or easy is it to change majors within either school? If I decide I'm not doing chem e, I'd like to be able to change easily and not have to make up too many courses. Thanks!

we need more info: how much will each school cost you, including loans?

The cost of rpi is 29k/year and the cost of northeastern is 17k/year. I’d have to maintain a 3.0 gpa at northeastern to keep my scholarship. When I spoke to my dad about it he said he can afford to send me to RPI, so I can go there if the cost is justifiably higher.

What makes you think this? You seem to be looking for reasons to justify going to RPI with its higher cost. You also have to consider the different experience of sleepy Albany versus dynamic Boston. {Now I am showing my bias.)

If you were offered the full tuition Scholars program at NU, you should not have a problem maintaining a 3.0 GPA. You apparently didn’t take advantage of the free trip to the Scholars weekend last month.

It’s just an assumption I had just based on reputation and what my guidance counselor has told me. It’s not really based on much other than that. If that assumption was wrong, please let me know! I’d really like to know more.

I was at the scholars weekend! Lol I was so shocked that some kids (I think it was the undecided majors) got a $50 gift card while I got a gym bag that I’ll never use :frowning:

I would go with Northeastern; there’s not much that would justify the extra price for RPI, even if RPI is a very good school (NEU is arguably better anyway).

yup, Northeastern. It’s Boston and not Albany. It has gender balance. It’s a lot cheaper.
