RPI Student Repository of Information and Websites

I thought I’d start up this thread dedicated to a quick location where people can find information on the fly. If you think it can benefit future and present students, feel free to post it here. I’ll start with a few:

Rensselaer’s official independently funded, and entirely student-run newspaper.

Make your RPI schedule and search classes here! (Way better than SIS)

Trying to help my son decide on a Dining Plan, probably the 19 swipe or the 15 swipe plan. I know we can change within the first 2 weeks but wanted to find the best match right off the bat to get him into a good regimen. He will prioritize dorms on Freshman Hill on his housing selection form:

What meal plan did you choose as a freshman?
How early are your first classes?
Do you and other freshmen get up a little earlier in order to go to breakfast at the Commons (or Russell Sage Dining Hall) using a swipe or did you tend to grab something at one of the cafes using Flex dollars or RAD?
Ever use the Simple-to-Go option for breakfast? What kind of food do you get and where can you eat it later?
Do many students go to the late night dining at the Commons? What do they serve at that time?
Is it common for students to order pizza late nights in the dorms? What’s it cost these days?
Did you use any Guest Meal passes? Are you allowed to use them yourselves?

We will be going to the April 8 Accepted Student Day but most of the scheduled presentations are focused on academics.

Thanks

Forgot to thank you both for the useful links.

@GoRedhead @joedoe Thank you for the info!

@newjerseydad888 I chose the 19 plan! I later went down to the 15 plan. I’d recommend starting at 15, and if it’s too little you can upgrade at any point in the semester without any fees. You can’t downgrade your meal plan after the first week though.

The time you have your first class varies. I have an 8am class on Mondays and Fridays, but for the most part I take classes starting at 4pm. I would highly recommend taking classes as late as possible! It seems like a good idea to take them early, but in reality it’s highly not recommended unless you have to.

In terms of breakfast, most people sleep in and skip it. You can also get “Sage to Go” or “Commons to Go” where you swipe and you can grab a drink, a fruit, a packaged entree (sandwich, egg bagel, etc.), a snack, and an extra item. They have breakfast sandwiches typically and salads, which later becomes lunch. You can get basically any drink you want (I’d recommend the juice). I usually go with that for many meals and just eat in my dorm. I also eat sometimes in the Rathskellar using flex which is on the bottom floor of the Union or go grocery shopping in fathers (same location). The cafes are also nice for coffee and pastries in between classes.

Late night is very common! I use it very often. It’s open from 8-10pm Monday through Friday (or Thursday - I forget). I highly recommend this if you eat late, or get hungry all of a sudden. Fathers is also open every day until 2am. Big Apple Pizza, which is on the corner near the biotechnology building, is also usually open until 2am on weekdays and 4am on weekends so if you get hungry you can get anything you want. They also sell drinks (gallon sizes as well for cheaper than fathers), salads, and other hot foods. There’s also a deli next door, and then Moe’s which you can use RAD or Flex for. It closes at 10pm or 11pm usually, but it’s pretty good and very popular among students. I actually interact with the Dean of Students very often there and class deans, which is very funny since Moe’s is right next to academy hall where the Dean offices are.

Pizza is $12 for a regular pie. The cost per slice varies, but is usually $2.50 or $2.75 for a regular and $3.50 for a “gourmet.” Ordering pizza is very common. The following places are good for pizza:

Amante’s in Downtown Troy: It takes them a while to deliver, but they’re open until 2am.
Cusato’s in the Rathskellar: Open until 12am every day. The pizza is ehh, but they give big portions. I go here very often after club meetings.
I Love Pizza of Troy: Open until 12am every day. Pretty good pizza. Also slightly slow delivery.
Domino’s: It’s cheap, it’s quick. It’s great.
Big Apple: It’s okay pizza, but it’s very popular and everyone knows it casually as “Bella’s.” Most kids that go there are drunk. It’s completely safe, and I go here very often. They have a very friendly staff. It’s a big pricey for pizza, but you can get a gourmet pie for $16, which isn’t too bad. I’d recommend the chicken bacon ranch, or barbecue slices.

Other good places to eat in Troy:
The Flying Chicken
Dinosaur Barbecue
Alibaba’s - turkish food
The Greek House - greek food
The Whistling Kettle (tell your son this is the best place to take a girl on a date, guaranteed to “work”)

Guest swipes: You can use them yourself. My roommate lost his ID and he had to use a few of mine. I also did when my friend visited that was applying. Don’t lose your ID! It’s like $50 to replace, since it also gives you unlimited access to all buses in the Capital Region, which required a special feature so it’s expensive for them to reprint them.

If you have any questions feel free to PM me! I’ll also be volunteering distributing materials on accepted students day, so I will also be available in person if you let me know!

.

@joedoe OK. I will PM you.

Great info, and thanks for going into the specifics which I personally really appreciate. Can I ask you to elaborate though why you believe it’s best to take classes later than earlier?
I also would like to ask are there more school work job placement openings in the mornings, or evenings?
Also, have you ever heard a case at RPI where a class course id gets closed out due to overfill? And then the student is required to push his entry to that class to a following semester or summer time? Texas A&M are going through some major problems there causing students to graduate 6 years due to lack of openings for the over acceptance of applicants of which they can’t accomodate enough classes.

@reformedman The work is extremely tiring. If you take classes in the afternoon, it’s easier to stay awake then fall asleep and wake up earlier. That’s at least what I’ve found. A small minority of people tend to find the other system works better, but I tend to hate early classes since if given the opportunity I will stay up all night studying.

In terms of student work placement, you can work whenever you want if you get work study. The students decide their own hours usually.

In terms of the following semester or summer, that never happens. RPI is constantly hiring professors. They enrolled 300 more students for this year, and ended up still lowering the student:faculty ratio to 13:1. Classes never get “overfilled” in this sense, and there is deliberate planning to make sure that doesn’t occur. If a class is filled beyond capacity, it’s not actually exceeding physical capacity. I was enrolled in a class last year which was overcapacity and it had 15 people enrolled when the physical space could hold 30.

At RPI, you are guaranteed enrollment in all required major courses. You will never be expected to push back entry or graduation due to this issue. Even if classes get filled up online, they will allow you to take the class by contacting your adviser.

@joedoe - Is it possible to loft all three beds in a Barton Hall room? Have you ever seen a room like that and do the wardrobes fit like that?

@TQfromtheU You can loft everything, Barton rooms are very large if you haven’t seen them. A lot of athletes loft all their beds and put their desks underneath so they have more room to keep their equipment.

Thank you @joedoe. Yes, we saw a Barton room but they had two of the desk and the wardrobes in the middle of the floor. OK for privacy but terrible for natural light and walking room.

@TQfromtheU You can do basically anything you want once you’re moved in within reason so that can all be taken care of. Me and my roommate rearranged our room at the beginning of the year since we felt similarly about how ours was set up.
