RPI: My parents would have to pay 6.2k /yr and I would have to take out 7.5k loans /yr

Buffalo: My parents would pay about 6k /yr, no debt

I plan to major in mechanical engineering. I'm having a really tough time making this decision because I'm not sure RPI is worth the 30k debt at the end. Buffalo is ranked 57th in engineering while RPI is ranked 27th. Is it worth it?

Son got into all (15) schools he applied to. Picked UB after looking at some of the schools and showing little interest in others.

Things to consider… some schools will take 5 years to graduate. Add that fifth year to cost.

Sons experience at UB has been great. Doing paid research on campus. Obtained a paid internship in engineering between soph and jr years and has one lined up for this summer (between jr and sr years). Both internships were obtained via the career fair on campus which is int he Fall semesters. HE has built up an incredible resume while there.

Son is a dual aerospace engineering major and mechanical engineering major. Lots of work. UB seems more well known than you would have thought. This summers internship is not in NY, and they have hired kids from all over. Somehow they must know UB’s reputation.

For the cost, it is a great education and I’ve read, it (as well as many schools) will not hold you back from employment.

Sounds like you got great merit/grants at each school.
