RPI vs. Rochester

I have to decide on a college to attend by May 1. That gives me 2 weeks.
I have cut my list down to two colleges: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and University of Rochester.

Please post comments or opinioins about either college that would help me decide.

Thanks,
Katie

what do you plan to major in??

If you like enigneering so much, I'd say RPI.

If you're undecided or looking for the best pre-med program, it's definitely URochester!

I plan on majoring in engineering but am undecided about which type: Chemical, Biomedical, and/or Environmental.

RPI then although I want you going to URochester

behappy99 Please explain.

Id go to Rochester...better college experience overall and minimally worse engineering.

actually, have you visited both schools?

Yeah, rochester's got a great engineering prog too. Check out optics if you're interested :-)

They are both good schools, but if you have any interest in liberal arts, or any possibility of not majoring in engineering, go to Rochester.

This actually can be a fairly easy decision. If you want a balanced college experience with good programs outside of tech and more social opportunities go to Rochester. However, if you have a passion for engineering and are sure to want to build a career with it Rensselaer is clearly the better place to learn it.
I've spent 13 years with Texas Instruments Inc. and our R and D group tends to hire from the very top eng/sci schools. The schools that seemed best represented were MIT,RPI,Cornell,Gatech,Stanford and the University of Illinois - UC. These schools along with a few others are really considered as the very top for eng recruiters.
Surely places like Rochester have very good engineering programs but just not as strong as the best in the world. RPI for undergrad engineering is absolutely one of the best in the world.

I have visited RPI at the Accepted Students Celebration and UR at the Spring Open Campus.

I can see myself at either place.

I love math and science. I definately want to study both subjects.

I recieved the Rensselaer Medal Scholarship for $60,000.

UR gave me comparable Financial Aid.

I want to participate in Track and have been talking to the coaches at both colleges.

More comments are welcomed about more information. Thanks.

So you love scienece and math only, not enigneering? Then, to be safe, I'd go Rochester because Rochester has good programs in every field, but RPI's strong at enigneering only. Also, URochester campus is way more beautiful as well as the city.

Do I throw the Medal scholarship out the window?

Does UR order mass quantities of laptops?

you said "UR gave me comparable Financial Aid", so it doesn't hurt so much to give up the scholarship if you really like UR.

For the laptop, I don't think UR would do that. Not very sure though, better checking it out by yourself.

Well... after chatting with a UR student, I am leaning more toward enrolling in UR....

cool! let me know what your final decision is! :)

I have enrolled! I sent my deposit in today!

University of Rochester Class of 2010!
