RSI 2005 - introductions/getting to know each other

As static suggested on another thread, we should get to know each other..

I'm Kim and live in eastern MA. I'm interested in doing linear algebra or computer science research. Like most other people, I have no clue how I got into RSI.

..shall we go counter-clockwise in a circle with the introductions?

I'm Derick (formally known as Frederick) and I live in AR. I'm interested in mathematical physics [p-adic dynamical systems] and Order/Lattice Theory.
flierdeke, did you qualify for USAMO? the RSI+USAMO acceptance really made my day...

Ooh, nice. Congratulations!!

I didn't make USAMO... had an 8 on the AIME-II (and could have qualified by floor value). But I didn't even qualify last year, so I'm pretty happy regardless.

I'm Alice from Louisiana. I'm interested in bio and chem, but I've never done any research before. Let's see... I have no idea how I got into RSI either; everyone on this board has crazy stats and such.

ah, i see. What kind of Linear Algebra research have you done/do you plan to do?
You can aim me at tsr472 also

I'm Vinayak from Arizona. I have no idea how I got in either. My fields on my application were Marine Biology and Scheduling in Industrial Engineering. However, I am open to many fields, and these are basically two random ones. My favorite would probably be along the engineering lines, but I like everything just about equal. I have done some research before, was an Siemens Westinghouse Regional Finalist, and just was notified that I have won grand prize at my local science fair and will be going to ISEF (meaning a lot more work this coming month...). IM me at Vinny919! :)

it seems that the people with little research experience are being preferred (so far, at least)...

^^before zogoto :-P

"I have no idea how I got in either."

vinny is so modest :D

hahaha I really don't, considering as how just from my state I was competing against someone that could say the EXACT same thing as above (also an ISEF finalist from a separate project and my SW partner), only with a higher sophomore AIME score [waitlisted, so maybe going]. Also, I was competing against the kid with the highest sophomore AIME score from my state. So it was definitely tough. My stats are not really that great...

Am I allowed to post in this thread even though I was waitlisted? lol

I was just wondering...Vinayak - what ethnicity is that name?

I'm Indian lol. And yes you can post in this thread! of course!

I knew that...was just making sure. :)
I'm Indian too. Yay for desi pride! Where in India?

I didn't make it, but I'll be at MIT this summer (more than likely, anyways). If you see an asian person, 'round 5'9 (not that there aren't ten thousand of them at MIT at any given time), wave and let me revel in your Rickoidial presence.

I'm not quite sure if this set of questions should be posted here or whether it merits another thread. I'd like everyone to reply to them since it would really help establish a profile of accepted students...

RSI Acceptes:
- What did you do the summer after your sophomore year?
- What college level courses did you take?
- Did you submit any additional work to RSI?
- Test scores?
- What awards did you mention in the application?
- Did you do research? How intensive? Summer or during school year?
- How familiar were you with the topics you picked for your top choices?
- Finally, what do you think was the deciding factor?

Hi, I'm Cindy, from New Orleans, Louisiana. I knew Alice (see above... just letting y'all know that she is really cute and smart and cool in general) beforehand from Advance Summer Camp, Mu Alpha Theta Nationals (we roomed together), Science Olympiad, blah blah... and I'm sure you all don't want to know our entire life histories. Anyway. So, she told me there was a thread on CC about RSI, and I wanted to drop by and say hi to people. So, waves... Hi! And I guess I'm a CC virgin, because hmmm, this is my first time being on here.

I use YIM, as it is more international than AIM, so feel free to IM me at effervescent_rivulette if you want to chat; I'm really interested in knowing people, because god knows I'm so excited about this summer. refrains from making random squees and glomps

Okay, I think I'll post something useful and answer the questions now.

RSI Acceptes:
- What did you do the summer after your sophomore year? Had a full-time, paying job at Tulane University Cancer Center as a student research assistant.
- What college level courses did you take? Oh geez... umm, Euro His, Ame His, Ame Gov, Comp Pols, Chem, Eng Lang, Calc AB, Calc BC... way too many abbreviations, I know, I know...
- Did you submit any additional work to RSI? Just an abstract of a research project that I managed to finish this summer.
- Test scores? 240 PSAT, 780 Math SAT, 800 Verbal SAT, 800 Writing, 760 Literature, 800 Math Level IIC... not so consistent, hmmm I know...
- What awards did you mention in the application? Some Mu Alpha Theta stuff and some science fair stuff.
- Did you do research? How intensive? Summer or during school year? Gah. I'm not typing that again... too lazy (as evidenced by all the abbreviations). Eh, just see above.
- How familiar were you with the topics you picked for your top choices? Damn, I'm so obsessed with epidemiology and pharmaceutical drug development (I guess 'cause I'm really into politics and human rights and civil rights and I'm WAYYYY liberal). I would have written about forensics as top choice, but I didn't think they wanted to know about my CSI addiction. :D
- Finally, what do you think was the deciding factor? Heh. If I knew this, I'd be like an omnipotent god or something.

Hey hey I got in cause I'm chill like that...
I'm Arun from LI, NY

If you got in my AIM is spydertennis
even if you didn't get in or didn't apply I wouldn't mind talking to you if I'm not busy...

RSI Acceptees:

What did you do the summer after your sophomore year?
stuff that looked good on my app, research

What college level courses did you take?
bunch of aps, doubled up on science this year

Did you submit any additional work to RSI?
nope I was under the impression we couldn't

Test scores?
11th 2280 Psats 690V 760M 800W
10th 2170 Psats 730V 800M 640W

What awards did you mention in the application?
bunch of bs things my school does, for some reason I suck at lisef/isef

Did you do research? How intensive? Summer or during school year?
yeah i did research during the summer

How familiar were you with the topics you picked for your top choices?
mad familiar with one, research the other by talking to phds

Finally, what do you think was the deciding factor?
They like the way I roll, plus I'm pretty tall...
Seriously, if you want to get into RSI, do as much research as possible, and then sound as smart as possible on the 3 most important questions in your field section... for all you guys who want a formula, there it is.
Guess I'm an omnipotent god huh?

zogoto! i want to extend a mazel-tov to you, you're our Arizonan representative this year! Where in Arizona are you? Greater Phoenix area? Tucson?

Hey everyone. Man, I did not expect this to happen. Anyways, I'm representin St. Louis here. Molecular Biology is my field of choice. AIM sn is emperorLZ. Hope to see y'all soon!

Since it requires way too much effort to wade through 123 pages of posts about RSI to find out about what it's like from people who went there before, do people mind posting about the social scene/atmosphere/their past experiences/etc on this thread? Or for people who are going this year, what you expect it's going to be like?
I'd really like to know about how it's like and all. Heh. Want to know what to pack and what high-tech equipment I should wheedle out of my stingy parents to buy for me.
Yah, just can't wait for the intro packet stuff to come in. shrugs

RSI Acceptes:
