RSI 2006 Introductions

yea! i'll continue with these...

Name: Sarah
State: OK
GPA/rank: uh...these don't really "exist" at our school, but what rickoid doesn't have all a's (or really good grades at least)?
SAT: havent even taken. 34 act though. eh
AP's: just the maths. calc bc and stat. this year i am taking mech, e and m, comp sci ab, and chem. i'd take the humanities aps too if they didn't cost $52 a pop.
Extracurriculars/Offices: a million different math and science contests.
Fields/Subfields of research: astronomy, photonics, physics.
Research experience: ISEF 2004 and 2005.

What you think got you in: (Now is not the time to recall your mother's etiquette lessons in public modesty. Honestly, think back to your application, and spill-- what do you think got you in?)
dunno. perhaps the isef stuff + i went to ssp last summer. i'm not brilliant, but i'll work my little hinny off for math and science.

And, most importantly, political affiliation and your views on stem-cell research: (before this turns into a virtual lynch-fest... JK - JUST KIDDING on this one)
i suppose i'm leaning more towards pro.

Oh! Also, a little bit about yourself, your interests, etc:
uh...i love music, reading, and art. plus math and science of course, and other random things. :-)

Also, feel free to post here if you have questions about RSI student life... one of the 05'ers that lurk around CC would probably be able to answer it!

is it okay to ask to do a project in something we know nothing about?
and do you work on your projects 24/7? i mean, you said many worked from 10:00-5:00, but do you work on it more than that in your free time (if that even exists).
and who are the mentors? how much do you do and how much do they do of the projects?
how do you come up with a question? do most rickoids already have something in mind when they come?
hmmm...i have more, but ill stop.

and now, for your entertainment purposes, i shall serenade you....

LA LA LA LA!

is there a site where we can read old rsi papers?

There are some you can get to here. http://web.mit.edu/rsi/www/

aye, the AP exams at $82 a pop and this year they are making us pay separately for E&M and Mechanix! What a rip-off!

there seems to be a trend in that students who have attended the Summer Science Program (SSP) in their sophomore year summer usually gain admittance to RSI in their junior year summer... any validations?

Has anyone gotten anything from CEE? When did you rickoids get the package last year?

i think late april or early may.

has anyone gotten anything from rsi conferming that they recieved our acceptance letters? i havent.

I don't usually do much cc but a thread just for RSI was too good to pass up. Plus, I hope the brillience of everyone else will rub off on me through the information superhighway before June 25th.
Name: Marie
State: ID
GPA/rank:4.088, in top five of 400-they won't tell me exactly where
SAT:238 on PSAT 80 on math (yay for same scores ZFrankel!) 800 on chemistry
AP's: never yet taken an AP test (I know-gasp!) have taken calc ab taking US history, english, german

Fields/Subfields of research:Atmospheric chemistry/physical chemistry
Research experience: one summer at ISU chemistry department (soon to be published)
What you think got you in: probably the fact that I have taken college (not AP) classes since ninth grade and gotten pretty good grades (one B+_curse organic chemistry!) Also, I basically started the math and science clubs at my school and have some previous research experience

Interests, etc:skiing, swimming, dancing, reading,

also, I haven't gotten anything from RSI beyond the acceptance letter either, rahrah

Questions
1) is there any need to bring reference materials, such as textbooks that we've read?
2) are there many computer resources available (like if you need to write an email at 3 in the morning, can you?)
thanks

There's no need to bring any textbooks. Your mentor will provide you the materials. Also, the MIT libraries are open to you.

The computer lab is always open at all hours of the day. During hell week you'll be staying up all night in the computer lab writing/finishing your final paper and presentation.

Can I order plane tickets now? We know the date that we should arrive, and I've heard that plane tickets prices will rise soon.

Can we continue a project? I've asked before, but I didn't really recieve an answer. I'm thinking about continuing an chemistry project.

Oh, gosh, that's exciting about the mit libraries being open to us...

drools :-) I could spend six weeks just reading books...

Continuations for science projects are difficult and you generally work on a project your mentor gives you (usually a project he/she is working on).

anaphora!

greetings. :-)

there is a german ballet? are you kidding me? the only german dance i know involves only skipping in circles. anyhoo, do you know/recognize this?

Habe nun ach! Philosophie,
Juristerei und Medizin,
Und leider auch Theologie
Durchaus studiert, mit heissem Bemuehn.
Da steh' ich nun, ich armer Tor!
Und bin so klug als wie zuvor;
Heisse Magister, heisse Doktor gar,
Und ziehe schon an die zehen Jahr
Herauf, herab und quer und krumm
Meine Schueler an der Nase herum
Und sehe, dass wir nichts wissen koennen!
Das will mir schier das Herz verbrennen!

:-) Würden Sie Ihre Seele demTeufel verkaufen? j/k

lol A dreaded comma error! german club, ballet was what it was supposed to be. Although, if I saw the german club doing ballet, it would make me laugh then inclined to move to Boston for life.
Nein, das habe ich nicht gesehen, aber meine Seele bleibt mit mir. Ich werde den Weihnachtsgeist verkaufen. Sehr preiswert!

Faust, right?

"Seele" und "Teufel" und "verkaufen" zusammen--da wuerde ich auch Goethe annehmen :)

My German club--well, German class, technically--does involve a bit of ballet for the play we're doing. At least, Dieter's going to be in a tutu, I believe...

This is a very real danger, especially for math folks. Turns out educational philosophy is quite close to model theory... I got "lost" a lot looking for books.

2. The computer lab is always open at all hours of the day. During hell week you'll be staying up all night in the computer lab writing/finishing your final paper and presentation.

To elaborate, "computer lab" means "every Athena cluster on the main campus." You can work in the big cluster in the student center with lots of other sleep-deprived Rickoids, in the smaller and more-tempting-to-just-call-it-a-night cluster right in Simmons, or in any number of clusters on and off the infinite corridor. You can go cluster-hopping to keep yourself awake, or request piano room access and go practice at 4 am when you need a break from writing. (Random weirdness that I've probably mentioned before: if you have trouble practicing oral presentations in front of people before you're decently prepared, or if you just find it more efficient to practice alone first, piano room access is a pretty nice thing even for non-musicians.)

wow. rsi sounds a lot like ssp (minus all the cool books.) after a couple weeks or so there, you begin to think that going to bed before 3 or 4 is a bit odd.

anyhoo, THAT IS CORRECT! yea! Faust by Goethe! how about this one... (pardon the spelling errors. i'm doing this from memory. i had to memorise both of these.)

Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir,
gar schone spiele spiel ich mit dir,
manch bunte blumen sind an dem Strand
meine mutter hat manch guelden gewand.

flierdeke, are you going to rsi?

everyone in general: so no one got anything back from rsi?

Ach, I remember having to memorize that, too. Erlkoenig, nein?

Sadly, not this year, but I'll be probably be around as a Nobody. Or perhaps the unofficial "I'm-really-stupid-and-don't-belong-here"/homesickness counselor :) (RSI05 here.)
