Rsi 2007

couple of questions

1) I lost my original application--the one they sent me (it is actually in my backpack which is believed to be lost/stolen at school). Does that hold any relevance?

2) I got better ACT's than PSAT's
ACT = 34math 33rdg 29eng 25sci composite=30
PSAT = 73math (don't ask me how I missed two ?'s) 71rdg 71writing = 215

3) How do the recommendations work? If the teachers write them on school letterhead, are they then sealed in another envelope to go into the larger one holding all of the application material?

4) I am taking an online course through Stanford's EPGY. Does that go written in next to other? I assumed it did, but, with my new application, I can make the necessary changes.

THANKS AND I WISH THE BEST FOR ALL OF YOU

Does RSI send applications based on PSAT score? Because I got an 80 on math but the only camps I've been invited to are TASP and NSLC...

AintNoMountain thanks for the info...

that math curve on the psats killed my score :( but Im still gonna apply!

there are enough 80s on PSAT math that they probably don't send it out to everyone who gets an 80. Maybe they send out based on total score, or maybe they go to specific competitions (AMC/AIME for example). Who knows?

I guess I could ask actually.

yeah. I have to skip 8th grade in order to get in a high school and take AP tests. I was homeschooled up to high school. My parents had tried for a couple of years to find a school that would let me take AP exams. But all of them, private or public, refused, saying that they didn't have room for an outsider!

I was able to take college courses in elementary and middle school, because I was "homeschooled." Now I am in HS, I can only take evening or weekend classes.

I am not sure yet what kind of project I would do. I am considering physics, biophysics, or chemical engineering. Any suggestions? Especially those who have already been there and done that.

to answer your questions.
1) I lost my original application--the one they sent me (it is actually in my backpack which is believed to be lost/stolen at school). Does that hold any relevance?
absolutely not.

2) I got better ACT's than PSAT's
ACT = 34math 33rdg 29eng 25sci composite=30
PSAT = 73math (don't ask me how I missed two ?'s) 71rdg 71writing = 215

No, you didn't. You're science on the ACT's is too low, and the english isn't good. I wouldn't send in the ACT scores, but the PSAT scores are pretty good.

3) How do the recommendations work? If the teachers write them on school letterhead, are they then sealed in another envelope to go into the larger one holding all of the application material?

yup
4) I am taking an online course through Stanford's EPGY. Does that go written in next to other? I assumed it did, but, with my new application, I can make the necessary changes.

Yes

Cool--an RSI thread in the summer programs forum. Good luck to all of this year's applicants.

I'm bumping this thread to prevent the embarrassing implication that the RSI applicants aren't aware of this new Summer Programs Forum on College Confidential. (Last year there wasn't a summer programs forum, so most discussion of summer programs happened in the High School Life Forum.) I would expect someone looking for information about RSI to expect to find some of that here--as RSI is not like most of high school life, but is arguably the premiere summer program.

Good luck to this year's applicants.

GPA: Probably 4.0, our school uses a 100-point system, and in that my unweighted average is about a 96

PSAT: 230 - CR - 77, Math - 76(darn), WR 77
SATs: Math - 800, Verbal - 700. SAT II: Bio - 750, Chemistry - 790, Physics (self study) - 800, Math level 2 - 800

AP scores: Biology - 5, Computer Science - 5, Calc BC - 5

ECs: XC, spring track, math and spanish tutor, math team (of course),academic team (I got second place overall among total individual scores in the last tournament, although the guy in first place beat me by about 200 points....), and IBM Watson Honors Program (3 hours of lecture/lab for 8 Saturdays)

Awards: None of great significance other than AMC 12 school winner last year (it was our first year doing Math Olympiad so pardon me for not even getting my AIME score from my math teacher -_-)
Current courses: AP Stat, AP Physics (Mech. at school, E & M at local community college), Multivariable calculus (Distance Ed.) AP Chemistry (self study), AP Environmental Science (self study)

Previous research experience: Science Research Training Program (SRTP), 200 hours of research and a completed scientific paper (on AMA-1 in Babesia divergens).

Current research: I had no leads for a research site until recently, and now it looks like I will be starting research at a nearby medical center in the pharmacology division (I plan on doing research on satellite cells and general myology since I want to become a myologist/stem-cell researcher in the future, I love sports and athletics so I believe this is a perfect bridge between my non-academic as well as academic interests)

What are my chances? Now comes the killer: I live in NY...now what are my chances?

Do we have to send in our PSAT scores or SAT scores?

I haven't taken the SAT - planning to take it in March.
However, I'm not satisfied by my PSAT score AT ALL. >_<
I was planning on taking the ACT on Feb. 10 and sending that instead, but I recently got the chance to participate in the science bowl comp. at JPL, and I really would rather do that.

Is it okay if I take the SAT math 2 and SAT biology and ONLY send that in...I would assume the PSAT is largely so they can see how you did on the math section, so if I score well on the SAT Math L2...do I have to send in my (190) PSAT score in?

I live in CA. I would have signed up earlier for the SAT in Jan. to avoid this mess, but I just got my PSAT score a few days ago.

Thanks for the help.

Oh, and piccolojunior - I think you have a very good chance. I have never been there, but you seem like you have everything on that dot.

how should our answers/essays be formatted

and would
Goldbach's Conjecture be an appropiate subtopic or is that too specific/common

I don't think Goldbach conjecture is too common, at least not as common as Poincare used to be, but I'm not one to know much about math research.

Speaking of which...how common of a topic is myology/satellite cells? Because I've looked at previous Siemens, ISEFs, and STS projects dating back to 03 and haven't seen anything related to skeletal muscle. Also, should I say satellite cells as the subfield or the more general myology?

Which would be better, a specific/original interest that will set me apart or a general/common interest that I'll be able to match a mentor with?

Here's a question for Research Science Institute alumni: what other summer programs did you consider for the summer in which you attended RSI? Had you done summer programs in previous summers before attending RSI?

How many teacher reccomendations are we supposed to have?

tokenadult: i considered PROMYS (went in 2005), MathCamp, Clark at Texas Tech, and GARCIA. I think a lot of people considered those, as well as Sumac at Stanford.

ml2: 2 recs

delibly: um...it doesn't matter? Just because they can't match you to a mentor in your very specific field will not make them reject you.

tokenadult: I've attended not so great summer camps locally. For the summer of '06, RSI was the only camp I had applied to; this was a rather stupid decision, but I had thought that if I didn't get in, I would just do research over the summer.

delibly: whatever will lead towards the better essay answer for you. be as specific as you want, but remember that the people reading your app aren't researchers, but rather MIT admins.

Thanks for the answers about other summer programs. I know of some of the math programs for younger students through students on the math team I coach. So far, none of those students have applied to RSI. (One is going for early college entrance rather than for any more high school summer programs--his family thinks that's the way for him to get appropriate academic challenge.) It's interesting to hear what different students consider, so I'd be glad to see more answers about what summer programs RSI alumni have attended or considered besides RSI.
