This question is based on a previous application. I’m not sure if this will be clarified in this year’s application, anyways:

For the recommendation letters, does the research mentor recommendation count for the two teacher reccomendations that are requested? And can we use a counselor rec?

In last year’s application it states “To be completed by two of the applicant’s science or math teachers or research supervisor.”

So it would seem to be a yes to the first question, no to the second.

EDIT: I realized I can’t tell if you’re asking whether the supervisor rec would replace both teacher recs, or just one. That, I couldn’t tell you. But I would guess you have to send two regardless, just one can be from a research supervisor.

Looking at the app on the part where we are supposed to say which of the courses we have taken, it has an asterisk next to all of the courses which obviously means it is required. Yet I have not taken computer science…Is that really required? Do all of the research projects for RSI need a detailed knowledge of computer programming?

Knowing how to program certainly isn’t required. If you can’t code I wouldn’t put CS down as one of your subfields though =p

As far as getting in as an international goes, it varies by country. CEE gives each of the participating countries (other than the US, of course) some number of slots, and those countries pick the students.

I know personally that being part of USA Computing Olympiad Gold Division helps a lot. A lot of people who do well in Olympiads (especially math) still get rejected but I know this one Gold Division contestant who got in.

Does anybody know how these Regular / Honors / College things work out? My school’s Multivariable Calc course is Honors, but since APs are apparently counted as College, it seems a bit funny to give a higher level course a lower category. Also, does anybody know if they count self studied APs? They don’t ask for AP scores anywhere.

If the RSI people see courses like Multivariate Calc, they’ll know that they are post-AP. These are math and science people after all. I know one girl at RSI who was in the IB program and still self-studied 14 APs, so self-studied AP definitely count/matter.

I know that RSI has 13 different categories for their program and i know theres a biomedicine one. Do you know if they do a lot of medical researches or not?
I am really into pathology, especially cancer, and was wondering if any of you know if RSI provides such things.

There are internships at Harvard Medical School and MGH, so yeah, there are definitely medical research projects. You’re not guaranteed to get a project in what you put down though. It will probably be something related; they’re not going to give you a math project when you put down biochem and organic chemistry, but if you want to do some specific project, the chances of that happening are very low.

Under the test score section, there are two ACT science categories…should I fill in both? This year (junior year) I took the ACT and got a 33 science (I was flustered) but in 8th grade I got a 34 in the same section. Which one should I send?

Also, when we are indicating courses on the application, is AP Calculus BC considered “College” or “BC” ? And, I’m assuming by putting BC, it’s a given that we’ve already taken AB? (because we can only put one of them)

How do you fill in the classes you won’t have taken by the end of this year? Maybe type N/A in the writing box? I accidentally hit submit and it says those fields are required. how do we fill it without having done it hahah?

Darn, I want to put on some self studies I’m doing this year, but it looks like they’d have no way of verifying that. =

Anybody know what ‘beginning’ and ‘intermediate’ mean on the programming? I’ve taken a meh C++ course, so I can set up classes and write functions; what level would that be?
