No. ISEF doesn’t help. Son was rejected today even with a grand award + several special awards at ISEF.

@randompersons I feel it still helps, but it by no means guarantees admission.

Wow. PROMYS is looking better and better by the second. You other rejects should check it out too. I’ll probably end up going there and having a great summer. Congratualations to those of you who got in. Perhaps I will end up at RSI as a mentor one day, but untill then I’ll have to make due with what I have.

RSIuser ; do you spell incorrectly on purpose or … ?

I don’t know how to spell. Spelling is an illogical system and I don’t have time to memerize the spelling of every word there is. Besides, you can understand my writing. To quote Mark Twain, “Any man that can spell a word only one way obviously lacks imagination.”

^feel the tension… Hahaha :)

@Nintendo360 – Those are fields that I applied for.

I’m honestly very very surprised I got in. My GPA/rank and scores are pretty solid (weighted GPA: 5.1, PSAT: 235) and I have a variety of extracurricular activities, but I’m mediocre at best in terms of research recognition (I was an observer at ISEF). I have been told that I’m a pretty good essay writer. Perhaps location plays a large role? I am from South Carolina.

Similar to what EldrWnd said, I actually wasn’t going to apply for RSI. I spent my winter break finishing up research and writing my paper, so I didn’t have time to start my application until a couple days before the deadline (completely my fault for procrastinating). By then, I was discouraged, firstly because I was sure that I wasn’t going to get in anyway and secondly because I only had two school days to do the entire application. My friend, who is a RSI alumni, encouraged me to do my best anyway, and I’m really glad I pulled that allnighter, because it resulted in my admission.

So yeah. I strongly encourage any future applicants to try try try, because you honestly don’t know if you’ll receive admission (or not) if you don’t try in the first place.

I agree-- to all future applicants, definitely apply if you want to go!! don’t think “I won’t get in anyways…” because you definitely have a shot!!

Here’s the list of last year’s participants, starting on page 3.

If there are any RSI alums out there, can you guys give a brief outline of what days at RSI were like? I’ve always been curious.

I’ve been hunting for information like that too. You can dig up some pretty good (if a bit old) stuff from the links in the second post at this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/high-school-life/364-research-science-institute-2005-a.html?highlight=Research+Science

But if any alum are floating around, it would be awesome to hear how RSI was :D

That list isn’t quite correct, there’s one person on there who didn’t actually go and it’s missing at least one person too (me, actually).

General schedule for those curious: the first week you’ll have various classes, everyone takes a computer class and a humanities class then you choose two others from a list of sciency classes. The next four weeks you’ll just be working on your projects during the day, since I was in math I had a lot of free time to use as I saw fit (mostly working on my own) but if you’re in bio or what have you you’ll probably be in the lab all day. Evenings are usually spent hanging out or working on papers, sometimes there will be dinner trips but a lot of nights there are guest lectures. Weekends have all sorts of fun (mostly optional) activities and more random assorted hanging out. Last summer we went to the beach one weekend, and there were all sorts of trips to various dinner-y places and lots of frozen yogurt. The last week (“hell week”) you’ll be frantically trying to finish your paper and practicing giving your presentation. That’s about how it goes. It’s great fun (and little sleep).

I cannot begin to even articulate how excited I am for this. :)

Has anyone else not heard anything about an admission decision yet?

I’m know I’m late, but I got rejected.

I haven’t heard back anything, but I guess that probably means bad news.

Did anyone who applied for math get accepted?

Also, are SAT scores required for RSI ? Or is PSAT score good enough ? Has anyone who hasn’t taken SAT yet gotten accepted into RSI ?

I didn’t send an SAT score and I was selected as an alternate. I’m sure they’re not required.

to those who got accepted, please post your stats if you haven’t already
