Rsi 2012

Anyone else planning on including a resume with their application? I dont think I could cover all my activities through the essays…

My last response is by far the shortest. It’s about one paragraph. And I emailed the CEE people about the resume. I’ll tell you what they say.

Hi everyone! I have a couple of quick questions.

On the website, it says nothing should be folded. Both of my recs are in sealed, normal sized envelopes. Should I go back and ask them to put the recs in manila envelopes so they aren’t folded or are the RSI people only referring to not folding any of the student materials (i.e essays, etc.)?

For the fields/subfields, what do they mean by distinct? If both my subfields are bio-related but fall under different topics from the drop down menu thing, are they considered distinct? Or do they want something like one bio and one chem topic?

Thanks!

@kait

I have the same issue with the first question, but I think the teacher recs are fine.

All they want is two different fields, and you can do whatever subfields you want.

@Bioboy12: Looks good from what I can see. I can definitely tell you have a passion for science and your grades and other ECs all look good too. I don’t think you have to send the world history score if you don’t want to, and besides since it’s not in the sciences it wouldn’t make a huge difference. And I think they only want 2 rec letters so if you’re not sure about the research supervisor’s letter then you don’t need to include it.

@kait444 and MedTrip: I can confirm that having folded rec letters is not going to hurt you (unless they’re being a lot more strict about it this year, but I doubt it). Besides, they couldn’t really expect you to put the letters in manila envelopes then find a bigger manila envelope that will fit the rec letter envelopes.

I had the same question about the recs and, using the same logic, deduced for myself that its okay to have them folded.

kinda freaking out about all of this, ive done some competitions and done well enough, but ive never done any research, like, ever… the only things I have going for me right now are that my recs will be out of this world and that im an EMT, which i guess is a good extracurricular. ill have to write good essays, i guess…

maybe posting some stats will make me feel better…

mediocre grades first two years, ~straight A+ in 5 APs this year. hoping that will hold up.
800math2 790chem, 2270psat (800math+writing) 34 ACT
EMT, ~200 hours of service in 5 months time
do independent chem projects at school, which ill talk about in my app
idk if anything else is relevant at this point…

what do you guys think?

@burningflame: Your scores are good, the “mediocre grades” is non-ideal but an upward trend is good. The EMT thing is fairly unique and interesting. Definitely talk about the chem projects. That’s basically “research”. It doesn’t have to be something you’ve done with some official lab group at a university or something, and in some ways doing your own independent projects can be better because it shows significant initiative on your part. Good luck!

Does RSI value athletic acheivements? I am an All-American swimmer, something that alsotrollin didn’t seem to think was very importaint. Isn’t that kind of unique for a nerd, or is it more common than I thought?

After you submit the application online, is there any way to print out the filled-out application?

First off, I just want to give atomicbaseball and alsotrollin (and others I might have missed) a shout out for taking the time to answer our questions, even though they don’t have to–Thanks! :)

Secondly, I really dont think that RSI will reject you based on the fact that your letters were folded :P

Lastly, thanks Jimmy for emailing them…let us know soon!

Hey guys!

Does anyone know whether or not they want to see AP scores? It says on the application to not send in supplementary materials if they are not required, but I think AP scores were required in previous years.

Also, are there are Pennsylvanians on this thread?

not me. Anyone from Florida?

Does the admissions office put enormous weight on how you write or do they focus mainly on the content of the essays?

hey from VA. Anyone else?

For the first essay, did you guys focus more on the “Research field” part or the “subfield” part?

Freshman11, I have the same question as you. Initially, I wanted to make my essays creative and unique, but I found that the questions don’t allow for that; I think they’re focusing more on content, rather than the other “flowery” things that make an essay nice to read.

@SniperCat30: As far as I can see, there is exactly no mention of AP so it doesn’t seem that they’re required. If anything, the scores might show up on your transcript anyways (I’m not quite sure how this works, though)

@freshman11: I’m sure they want readable essays that seem like they were written by someone intelligent, but otherwise I think they’re focusing more on content. As Bioboy12 noted, they’re not looking for the flowery, creative language that a lot of essays you’ll write will have. And honestly I don’t think my own essays were particularly well written (a bit rambly, as I can tend to be) and obviously it didn’t matter much. Since you’re going to be writing a research paper at the end of RSI they do want to see that you can write, but the writing in scientific papers does not tend to be particularly flowery or creative or what have you.

What do they exactly mean by unofficial score report?

Do they want a copy of the score report that collegeboard mailed home?
If this is the case, what do you do with scores that only appeared online? print them out?

I just received my act scores yesterday, and I got a 35 for composite but only a 33 for science… do I have to include it in my application and if i have the choice, should i include it?

Tbqh there’s no point in chancing anyone; the answer for almost everyone will be “low but nonzero.” I believe the overall acceptance rate is on the order of 5%.

They’re not going to reject anyone for having folded recs.
