RSI 2015

Does it look bad to just submit my PSAT score (237) and not my SAT score (2270) because it’s low and I don’t want my PSAT score to look bad in comparison. So is it okay just to submit one score, or is it beneficial to submit more scores, even if they are lower? Is there a difference? Thanks!

I scored a perfect on the CR section of PSAT but did not do particularly well on the other two sections, but on the real SAT I got 800 on both Math and Writing. Should I just submit SAT 1?

(On SAT 1 I scored a low 700 CR)

So I’m a junior from CA and I have a few concerns for the RSI app.

  1. I took the PSAT and some online hack shows that I got a 230 (V70, M80, W80). However, my school doesn’t hand back score reports until January 15th and our counselors are pretty stubborn about it. I’m taking the January 24th SAT so I don’t have scores for that either. Any suggestion for how to handle the PSAT situation?
  2. The teachers in my school district randomly decided to go on this strike and their union isn’t allowing them to write recommendation letters. If I ask my physics prof (from a class I took at the local community college) and a research mentor, would that be okay even though it’s technically not 2 teachers?
    Thanks guys!

I believe collegeboard might be giving you the code early January (3rd) to get access to your report.

Have a question. How important is a history of attending math / science competitions? I am puzzled with number 5: What extracurricular activities and/or hobbies demonstrate your interest and ability to undertake scientific or mathematical research? (Give some measure to the extent of your participation and/or accomplishments in math or science competitions, research internships, and awards received.)

So should I read this like if you do not participate in competitions do not apply to this program?

@seal16 The way I think about it, having a record in math/science competitions is all well and good but doesn’t directly associate with research, just demonstrates your interest in science/math. There are other equally valuable ways to demonstrate this interest that are not prestigious. They are not looking for the kids who are best at math or know the most about some specific science topic, they are looking for people with a genuine passion for science and the potential to succeed at research. Anything you do to exercise your passion for science/math is valid to put for that question (competitions, clubs, experiments or readings at home, etc. all are fine). Definitely apply if you think you have the potential to be a leader in research, no matter how empty your math/science record is. You have nothing but the app fee to lose.

So I stumbled onto the RSI application today, and I’m not sure whether or not to apply. I don’t have a background in any sort of extracurriculars in math or science, although I’m really passionate about research and such. Just haven’t had the opportunity. Plus, I get back to school January 6th and would have to ask for rec letters that day… which would mean a little bit of time in a turnaround. Is it still worth applying? $60 is also a bit of money…

What do you guys think - should I apply?

Grade: 10
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: F
Unweighted GPA: 4.0
Classes Taken: AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Computer Science A, AP Statistics, AP World History, AP US History, AP Macro, AP US Govt, Physics Honors
Science Research Experience: Local Award Winner at International Google Science Fair (Top 150/ 10,000s), Currently Studying Photovoltaic Cell Optimization at local lab
Extracurriculars: President of Math Club, Founder of an Educational Non-Profit, Co-Captain of Science Olympiad Team (2nd place in states last year), Newspaper Editor
PSAT: 214 (76 on Math)
Math II SAT Score: 800

You have to be a junior to apply.

@Falcon1 I think you can apply in sophomore year if you intend to graduate early.

@swimmygirl123 what state are you from?

@magic125 AZ

@swimmygirl123 That is impressive that you have taken so many classes! What did you get on the AP tests? And what are you going to be taking next year?

I got 5’s on Calc AB and World History and a 4 in Computer Science (I self-studied it online). I’m taking the rest this year. Next year, I’m taking Chem HL, Bio HL, Math HL, Psych SL, and French SL since I’m technically an IB student.

How much do you think my scores will hurt me? I’ve never been too good at standardized tests.
Sat:2080 (800 on math)
PSAT:227 (80 math)
ACT:34 (everything good but 29 on reading)
800 sat II math
750 sat bio
760 Sat chem
Strongpoints:
USAMO qualifier
State AMC 10 and 12 winner.
Taking theoretical math and physics courses
(Finished calc 3 and physics c)

@guilou25 you are obviously very, very good at math, but your SAT and SAT Bio scores might hurt your chances

Hey Guys! I just have a couple of questions…

1) Do we have to send all of our scores or can we just send the ones that put us in the best light?? For example, I took the ACT earlier this year but my scores weren’t reflective of my potential, and I think they would definitely weaken my application. Can I just not include these scores in my application and just have my PSAT results instead?

2) I’m a little confused about the application process…the app says to include an unofficial report of your scores. Could I just photocopy my PSAT score report and include that in the application? My SAT Subject Test Scores were reported online so how would I include an unofficial score report of that? Also, how would my school have an “official” report of my scores??

3) Any Rickoids from previous years, I understand that you are all busy but could any of you post your essay responses from your applications? If not, could you offer some advice for the essays?

4) For the two teacher recommendations, I’m planning on having my science teacher do one recommendation and my research supervisor doing the other one. Is that okay or do I NEED to have at least two TEACHER recommendations?

Thank you to anyone in advance!! I’m really nervous about this application process, so any advice/help would be greatly appreciated!! If it’s not too much to ask, do any previous Rickoids want to look over my essays?? Thanks everyone, and good luck to all the applicants this year!!!

Hello everyone, I am interesting in applying to RSI for physics. PSAT 237 (77 reading), SAT 2400. However, I have no research experience. The only truly exceptional aspect of my extracurricular competitions is my performance in geography and current events competitions. Sure, I have qualified for AIME, but I’m assuming that everyone applying will have reached at least that level and probably the USAMO. In current events I am a two-time TX state champion, while I won the National Geographic Bee in middle and last year placed 2nd in the country with a bronze medal at iGeO (International Geography Olympiad). Do you guys think I should put this geography/current events stuff on my application even though it’s not relevant to the natural sciences, where my interest lies?

Thank you in advance!

Here I was feeling confident after writing some great essays and then comes the 1-2 page listing of awards. Mine only reached half a page…
