How well do RSI alternates do in terms of admission to MIT and other top schools like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia? Do you know any specific examples of alternates who did/didn’t get into these colleges?
I think it’s what you do that matters … RSI gives you the opportunity to work with a professor/mentor who is at the top of his/her field, and often leads to a publication. Stating that you were an alternate for RSI doesn’t provide colleges with any useful information about what you are able to achieve. One of my friends wasn’t accepted to RSI, and decided simply to continue working with the lab he had for the past 2 years, got 3rd author on a significant paper, and was accepted to Harvard REA this year.
