RSI....Is is really good?

I was wondering if RSI (the one in MIT in the summer) looks really stellar on your application/resume. I want to go to JHU for pre-med and am trying with all my efforts to make myself a great candidate. Since RSI is free, it looks better than those paid for ones, right?

yes, it’s good if you can actually get into rsi, but it’s not because it’s free…it’s because it’s a super-selective and awesome program.

Yes it does. Good luck getting in next year (unless you’ve already been accepted this year in which case congratz)

It’s amazing. My son who’s now in grad school still says it was one of his best academic experiences. And it does look better than paid for programs.

I’m applying next year. Do I need to know all those programming languages like Java, C++, Linux, etc.??

no, but the acceptance rate is like 4%. just sayin. i got rejected.

Like others have said, RSI is extremely selective, so you should definitely apply to a few other programs/internships so you have a back-up if you’re rejected. It seems like the number of applications have skyrocketed at the few well-known pre-college programs in each field (RSI, Ross mathematics, the Iowa writing program) because students want the prestige factor…but there are plenty of other worthwhile programs out there.

If I can make a gender assumption based on your username, dreamgirl, you could also look into science programs specifically targeting young women (some are more engineering-focused, like the Women’s Technology Program at MIT).

so what are the other programs out there that really help you, PorterSargent?

RSI, SSP, BU internship, WTP, MITES, YESS
TASP, TASS, COSMOS

Here are some other residential summer research programs that would be great experiences for future pre-med students. Some are operated by universities, some by private labs. Sometimes you pay, sometimes you get paid. I know the Stanford, NIH, Cornell and Simons programs are very competitive and some have their own threads here, so you can see how you stack up against previous applicants.

you are awesome! THANKS!!! :)
