Has anyone here been accepted to RSI? I am currently applying but am afraid that my SAT II scores are too low. SAT II Math IIC, Chemistry, Biology were all around 600.

Besides that, everything is alright I guess. Can any of you former RSI members please share your scores, EC's, and other things that you placed on your application that made your admission probable?

Is it easier to get into TASP than RSI? I procrastinated applying to TASP until it was too late. I hope I will not have to regret this!!! This is why I am desperately seeking admission into RSI!

Please give me some tips and advice which could help me make an excellent and acceptable application for RSI. Thanks a lot!

from what i hear, rsi is much more difficult to get into than tasp. rsi has an approximate 0.5% acceptance while tasp has an 3-4% acceptance rate. I hate to be mean, but your SAT ii scores are not going to cut it for rsi.

i applied last year and didn't get in. the year before, i think 3 people from my school got into RSI.. but last year, not a single person.. and these kids have like perfect SATs .. done a tremendous amount of researching during high school ... so...

a guy friend of mine did get into telluride last summer.. it is definitely easier to get into than rsi..

RSI = Research Science Institute.. a joint researching program between Harvard and MIT

I know getting into RSI is highly based on academic achievement (GPA, SAT, and such), but how much research background/publications do you need? They wouldn't accept someone who know nothing about labs, or would they?

go into the HIGH SCHOOL ISSUE thread and look at the "RSI 2005" thread. We have 2000 replies.

But to answer your question:
"Has anyone here been accepted to RSI? I am currently applying but am afraid that my SAT II scores are too low. SAT II Math IIC, Chemistry, Biology were all around 600."
Yes there have been CCer on this board who got into RSI, including myself.

"Can any of you former RSI members please share your scores, EC's, and other things that you placed on your application that made your admission probable?"
RSI Admission is probably the most selective. It's like getting into medical school. The chance is far less than getting into Harvard. There's not perfect application. You do what you love, and you follow it passionately. Passion. Trust me, scores aren't everything. They accept geniune interested and passionate people.

"Is it easier to get into TASP than RSI? I procrastinated applying to TASP until it was too late. I hope I will not have to regret this!!! This is why I am desperately seeking admission into RSI!"
That's a funny method of thinking. Like a poster already pointed out, getting into RSI isn't a piece of cake.

"how much research background/publications do you need? They wouldn't accept someone who know nothing about labs, or would they?"
Every applicant has a different situation. There are rickoids who have no research experience, but they excel in other areas, such as getting participte in International Olympiads. Yes, they have accept people who know nothing about labs.

Um, I recently got a reply from RSI and I'm officially an alternate (as they stated in bold letters) I'm REALLY curious about where I stand. What are the chances of an alternate becoming a participant? I mean, I'm practically on the waiting list!! Thanks

It depends. I hear there are usually 4-6 alternates. The chances of you getting in depend where on the list of alts you are, and how many people choose not to attend RSI. This can be anywhere from 0-n, but I hear that n is usually arbitrarily small.
