RSP Tuition Break for New England

Is there anything special that was supposed to be filled out to qualify for the Regional Student Program Tuition Break for New England? My son applied EA (and was already accepted) for Physiology and Neurobiology which is one of the majors available to Massachusetts residents going to Connecticut. There was nothing on the common app or the supplement to check to indicate interest in the RSP. Are we missing something/

My son applied from Mass last year for Biomedical Engineering (also part of the NERSP for Mass students), when he recieved his acceptance letter and merit package it referenced that he would also be receiving the NERSP discounted tuition, we did not need to do anything differently, it appears to be automatic - at least it was last year. I think the biggest thing is that these programs are limited as they do not want people applying to a major they are not suited for to save money. Those who are accepted, but do not make the cut for that major will be placed in ACES at full tuition from what I understand.

We couldn’t find anything in his acceptance letter about it so I called. She said that it is in his record that he will receive the discounted tuition

While I had her on the phone I asked if there would be a 2nd pass looking at the honors program and merit scholarships. Sadly, she said no. He missed the SAT cut off for the honors program by 20 points. You need 1300 and he has 1280. So close …

That is different from last year - they did look at honors program in April once decisions were in. Many students who are offered the honors program choose to go elsewhere as they are usually kids with multiple merit/honors offers. It happened to a close friend of my son’s - she was offered the 50% merit shcolarship, but not honors. Then in May they notified her that she was accepted into the honors program. She joked that it was my son’s slot (he declined as he chose another school).

At least you know he is getting the NERSP tuition break for sure!

I’ll keep my fingers crossed that she didn’t know what she was talking about  My son’s girlfriend is a freshman @ UConn this year in the honors program and she thought they did a 2nd look also.

What did your son’s friend have for SATs? Was he below the 1300 cut-off?

UMass has a 1300 cut-off also but must be flexible because my son did get into the honors program there already - but he definitely prefers UConn!

@ OP-what were your son’s stats? I applied EA for physio/neurobio and I’m OOS regional…I was deferred, so I’m wondering how I stack up against him.

His friend got accepted into UConn EA honors / merit scholarship. Main differences were higher SATs and 2nd in class.

I hope I get in! Thanks! Lol maybe your son & I will meet sometime…“how’d you know I my GPA was a 4.9?” “uh…college confidential!”
