Hey guys, I was accepted to both the engineering programs at RU, U Mich, and UMD. I realize that U Mich has a top-ranked engineering program but the thing that worries me is the 55k price tag (which would be a burden on my parents) and distance from home. Rutgers is giving me a scholarship for $3,000 a year, with the already low in-state tuition. UMD is cheaper than U Mich even though am also out of state there and costs about 40k a year. I got into the global communities program there and they are giving me one of the best dorms on campus.

Do you think it is worth going to UMich and that a degree from there will pay-off in the long run? Is the experience at UMich better than RU or UMD? Please give me your opinions. Thanks!

I was also going to go to Umich but the price was too high. The thing that made me choose Rutgers was that I plan on going to grad school, if you’re 100% sure you want to do engineering I’d say go to Umich, get a great education and then crawl your way out of debt. In the long run, assuming to do well and don’t switch around it would be better. That said Rutgers provides more freedom and flexibility to switch (a lot changes in four years) and if things go differently you won’t be buried in debt without any way out.

Rutgers engineering is okay, I see no reason to go to UMD which is not significantly better than Rutgers overall (or even at all), worse is many key departments and expensive

55k for 4 years is a lot of money. (I am a parent). Add to that books, living expenses, and flights home. (and from what I’ve been hearing, a lot of engineers take 5 years to finish their degree, increasing costs) I would go to Rutgers, but that’s me.

needsmoresleep is correct when he says that a lot can change in 4 years.

There is also an engineering forum with a lot of good posters; you might want to post your question there as well.
