Just curious, how bad is the lack of air-conditioning in those halls in the summer? Are most people fine if they get a good fan and open a window? I have heard NYC gets very hot during the summer so I was just wondering what those of you who have lived there in the summer think?

I’ve heard that you can’t open windows in NYU dorms o_o…

really? in all of them? but thanks for your response, I never imagined being unable to open a window.

Obviously, you can open the windows. I have my window open right now in Palladium. I had open windows in Goddard and Lafayette.

Are you actually living in these dorms for May - August? Or are you talking about August - October?

It’s doable. Box fans are your friend.

I would be living in them from May-August.

It all depends on what you are used to. If you currently live in a climate where you run the AC all summer, then you will be miserable without it it NYC (especially if you are a girl who has to endure lengthy sessions with a blow dryer, flat iron, etc. each day!). If you currently live in the cooler/less humid regions of the country and are used to doing without, you might do just fine. However, the ventilation in the dorms can be iffy, particularly if your windows face into a light shaft or are blocked by an adjacent building. Given a choice, I would go for a dorm with AC.

It can get humid and hot here. Once in a while we’ll hit 100+ in August, and you’ll see temps in the 90s pretty often. Even when it’s in the upper 80s the humidity on some days will make it feel a lot worse.

I’m going to be a summer RA down at Broome Street and I’m happy to have AC. Since I live in North NJ we have similar weather as in the city…and sometimes the AC never turns off for a few days.

Does anyone know when students are notified re: what housing they have been assigned? daughter is a non-enrolled applicant that applied for housing the day it opened (back on March 17th)

Rodney: Here is the latest from the NYU Summer Housing website:

Current Availability

March 29, 2010

We are continuing to accept applications for our 2010 program.

The deadline for application submission is Friday, April 2, 2010. If you intend on enrolling this summer, we will accept your application after April 2, 2010, however, it will be based upon space availability.

For non-enrolled, non-NYU student applicants, we continue to accept applications, however, as of March 29, 2010, the only residence halls available to request are Brittany & Rubin Halls. These halls are traditional residence halls, which means there are no kitchens and all residents are required to maintain a meal plan. In addition, both of these halls are not air-conditioned. Residents are not permitted to bring in personal air-conditioners, although fans are permitted.

So it depends on your NYU/enrollment status. However, now that the initial April 2 deadline has passed you should be notified soon.
