Rude Admissions Rep?

I called the Admissions Office and the woman who answered the phone was rude to me. Temple is the only school I've applied to, that is not a LAC. I was beside myself that anyone in an admissions office would behave like that, since the other schools pretty much roll out the red carpet for their applicants and try to entice you to attend there, not deter you from doing so.

Has anyone else experienced this with Temple's admissions? Is this a sign of what the culture is like on campus?

Temple has the best program for what I want to do, but the location and now this have really made me second guess whether it's some place I want to go for 4 years.

If someone on the phone (who represents nothing), and feeling overly intimidated about being outside of safe suburbia bother you so much, you might want to look elsewhere.

I suppose I should clarify my thoughts further:

Persons chosen to work in the admission’s office at most schools are typically hired to be salespeople or are very positive examples of the student body. The admissions office absolutely is the first representation of the school to most applicants. If I call the admissions office and someone is very rude on the phone, I can only imagine what the rest of the student body is like. I don’t think it’s a far stretch to understand why a person would not want to be surrounded by others who are largely hostile and/or disrespectful.

The location issue is not only about leaving safe suburbia. It’s mostly about convenience for me, getting to/from campus from both my work and home is going to be a pain. Then there’s the issue of parking. Then there’s the issue of safety, which is a real concern, because of the area of the city and especially since I will be taking all of my classes at night. Again, I don’t understand how it’s a far stretch to see the location as a negative, particularly for a commuter.

The worst response I ever had from an Admissions Dept was when I called to find out about tours at Carnegie Mellon right around freshman move-in/Labor Day weekend and I was told literally “we ain’t giving no tours”… I was so taken aback I was literally speechless… Emerson also gave me a poor impression when I expressed surprise that no tours would be available on Columbus Day-given that it was a school holiday in NY/NJ/MA/CT. The rep basically accused me of lying when I told her that I was able to schedule a tour that morning for BU instead and that Brandeis was having a fall Open House

How exactly was this person rude?

I’m under the assumption that the OP is a generally negative person, who overanalyzes everything. If you think someone on the phone represents our entire student body, and if you think our campus is too unsafe, I suggest you find another school.
