Hey! I was just wondering if any other RUE applicants were around. I figured I would start a thread so we could discuss our application experiences and anticipation, as it seems people have in previous years.
Dumb question, whats a RUE applicant?
Not dumb at all - I should have written it out. Sorry! It’s the Resumed Undergrad Education program, which is for non-traditional students who have been out of high school for 6+ years but have not yet received a Bachelor’s.

I’m applying! I’m almost finished with my application. I was hoping one of these would start, I’ve been through all the threads from previous years but didn’t want to start it myself. I’m generally more of a lurker than active participant.
Thanks for starting this thread.
What’s everyone’s background?
Married mother of 3 here, trying to be RUE transfer from community college. Dropped out of HS but have done great at CC. President of honor society, made good grades while balancing school with family and two jobs. My only ECs are honor society, planned large charity event and few small community service things. Not enough time with kids and such. Almost 30, super anxious about this process! Wondering where everyone else is at.
You’re welcome! I’m interested in learning about the other applicants
@oldwiggly we’ve talked so you know my story a bit but so everyone else knows:
I was an average achiever in high school. After high school, I messed up and made some really poor choices for a year or so, which led to some negative things, but it also eventually led me to a career field that I’m passionate about. It also led me to become a much more hardworking and motivated person, and when I went back to school at a community college I really applied myself. I graduated with my associates degree and transferred to a small state school. This is my third time applying to Brown, but my first time applying to RUE. Fingers crossed!
Best of luck to each of you. Your perseverance is inspiring!!!
My son is a traditional freshman who would benefit from sharing classroom space with your real world experience.
@Nocreativity1 Thank you so much! Your kind words made my day.
@bluepeony I didn’t know it was your third time!! So hopeful for you!
@oldwiggly Thank you!
I just submitted my RUE application a couple of weeks ago. As for my background, I’m a Marine veteran who served as an operations consultant. During my enlistment, I attended community college and spent my leave periods solo-backpacking in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. I’m looking to major in anthropology and minor in economics. My long term goal is to provide operations and strategy consulting to Latin America based non-profits. I would love to connect with any other veterans who have applied to RUE or other programs like Columbia’s GS or Yale’s Eli Whitney program.
@AndyG130 You have a really interesting background and great goals. I’m really jealous of your time spent backpacking! I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to a few other countries, but not as many as you, I bet. Thanks for joining the thread!
I applied this year too!!! I had a lot of barriers to access higher education after high school. mostly because of my immigration status. I dedicated the last ten years to build an impressive resume. I am experienced in multiple sectors like public health, policy, and community arts and engagement. I am a published author and poet, radio show host. And I run an organization that helps undocumented youth and their families access free legal and financial assistance. Looking forward to see what happens, anyone knows when they’ll tell us results?
@AM2Z91 Wow, what a resume! You sound awesome.
It seems like interviews are offered to some, but not all, applicants in early April. Then I think decisions are sent out in early May.
The waiting is so stressful!
good luck to everyone!
Waiting is the fun part, time to pick up all the hobbies that we neglected while filing delicious apps.
Good luck to you too, @AM2Z91, and everyone else!
Hey all! Everyone here has some amazing backgrounds. I’m also applying to RUE this year. I’m 31 and a community college student… I skipped college after high school bc I did poorly in school and I was recovering from a traumatic youth. I spent a lot of time traveling and working… I found out last summer that I have ADHD and once I realized why I had a hard time in school, despite being smart, I went back to college.
I have a 4.0 with strong humanities classes, science, and foreign language. I took the ACT in Feb (with a total of three months to study for it ?) and managed to get a 33 composite.
My biggest weakness on my application are EC’s but I managed to be featured in regional papers for some of the things I did, including starting an community arts program at my job.
I hope I stand a chance, y’all sound incredible.
