Rugs!

my dorm room next year is gonna have tile flooring, and i'm looking to get a rug... BUT i don't know what size to get or what type to get..

i've been looking at bath rugs (those seem to be the most compfy) but i don't know what size i need. i'm looking at a 21" X 34" bath rug that would just be at my bed side so that when i get outta bed, i don't have to have the shock of cold, bare tile.

can anyone offer advice, etc? would it look funky to just have my little rug on my side of the room near the bed? thanks in advanced.

So last semester I bought a big piece of carpet, had it cut to the size of my room(an odd shape/size) and had it bound(so it wouldn't fray). I had amazing wall to wall carpet. It was great... until my roommates started to slack on the cleaning of the giant carpet. I did my job once a week but they did not. Then it got kind of gross... not gross enough that most people would notice, but I'm a clean freak and I refused to sit on it from about March on.

For this upcoming semester I purchased a 8'x12' sheepskin rug(amazingly soft/fluffy) for infront of my bed/tv and then a runner for in front of the door. Its just easier to clean bare floor. I'll have hardwood floors so its not like they're gross and needing to be covered.

Yeah...tile floor can get kind of gross for the first/last months of the year if you aren't careful about the temperature in your room...atleast from my experience it just holds moisture and then its like, your floor is just wet. I mean, maybe that's just because I keep my room a weird temperature.

Anyway, what I do is I just get a $30 rug from Lowes/Home Depot every year. I forget the size, but it's usually just enough to cover the part of the room I walk on, and then I have a little bath one by my bed. I just throw it away at the end of the year and get a new one because, well, it's cheap and gets gross...lol. But I'd definitely suggest a larger area rug with tile floor.

Do you know the dimensions of your dorm room, and how the furniture is laid out? I know that in my room, I'll have a 3'x6' area in between my bed and desk, so I bought a rug (a nice bright pink shag from walmart, about $30) that fits that area well. I think it's 3'x5'. That's what I suggest. They have a good selection.

Check with your school first. My school, for example, rents the carpet to dormers on move-in day. I don't know the price but I doubt it will be entirely expensive because we don't keep them. They are already prefit to the rooms as well I believe so it seems like the best option for me and my roomie.

you want to get a rug that's about 9x12 or 5x8 something like that. Check at places like Walmart, or if you have an Ollies that's usuallly a good place... I don't think you'll want just a tiny little bathrug to go next to your bed. You can usually find them in August around 20 bucks.

Schools rent them out and they charge you an arm and a leg for them. My roommate rented one from my school freshman year for like 50 bucks, while I bought one for 20.

Wow, I just got a mailing from the carpet people and they're charging over 100 for a 9x12. Totally not worth it?

In my dorm, the room was rectangular with all the furniture along the longer walls so we had a big space in the middle, and I bought a $20 12x9 or something like that rug from Home Depot to stick in the middle. We looked at carpet remnants before but they were all around $80 for the same size, and the rugs that the school was selling on move-in day were the same price. It's easiest to see if you can wait until you get there and measure the room.

my room is 12.5' by 15.5' (oh gosh, it's sounding like a prison cell, lol, some of the rugs the places sell are larger than my room. ikes! lol)

anyways, there are built in dressers, desks, and shelves. and beds (that are bunkable if my roomie and i decide we want more save space)

i'm kind of iffy about getting a large rug b/c [1] i'm not sure what "style" my roomie would want [2] larger rugs are usually rougher. any suggestions?

Find a dog on the street and skin it--they make great throw rugs.

But always remember, carpets are less hygenic than hard floors.

the first thing you need to ask yourself when making a college carpeting purchase is this: how easy will this be to clean when someone spills an entire beer on it... or worse? the second thing is a natural follow-up: how much do i want to spend on something thats going to get beer spilled on it... or worse?

this means that regardless of what you purchase, it needs to be low/no-pile and inexpensive enough (this is relative, of course) that you will be willing to throw it away at the end of the year. i have a great picture somewhere of 'or worse' embedded in an expensive shag rug if anyone needs more convincing.

as for size, the bigger the better. most typical double rooms will accept an 8/9x12 rug very nicely.

get cut carpet remnants from lowes or home depot. I had berber carpet my freshman year and it was great b/c spills didnt sink into it.

I'm getting a 3x5 for my side of the room, but i'm keeping it AWAY from the head of my bed to help avoid those 'or worse' situations.

I'm thinking of getting a cloth one, so if it gets gross or beer stains I'll just throw it into the wash.
