I don’t think UF is going to start admitting wholesale numbers of additional out of state and international students to increase revenue at UF. I think Bernie Machen is posturing, with a subtile threat to the state legislature and powers that be that help fund UF, and also to appease UF faculty. UF is a state institution; it wouldn’t sit too well with Floridians if the school filled up with non-Florida resident students subsidized by Florida taxpayers, even still when the OOSs pay the higher tuition fees. Floridians won’t like it if out of staters take the seats of Floridians in UF classrooms; Floridians will make that clear by complaining to their elected officials who control state funding pursestrings.

Machen also suggested maybe expanding online programs and distance learning at UF to increase revenue. Machen suggested, per the Gainesville Sun article attached below, that distance learning programs like nursing, education, etc., might be appropriate for UF and could bring in new revenue to UF–kind of like Phoenix University.

“Floridians will make that clear by complaining to their elected officials who control state funding pursestrings.”

This sounds like Populist drivel…

Unlike the regional universities - UF & FSU get alot more leeway when it comes to these matters. The funding from the state sucks anyway, so honestly what is there to lose?

Also the in-state Floridians put up a resistance to differential tuition and they still lost. I am of the opinion that because UF generates $6 billion for Florida’s economy then they can do whatever they heck they want as long as they continue to generate this kind of revenue for the state coffers.

Also keep in mind that FSU is also on this same trajectory. The Flagships have double the legislative support.

Populist drivel is very effective in Florida politics; ask Florida governor Charlie “It’s the right thing to do” Crist.

Anyway, I don’t see UF loading up on more out-of-state students for increasing revenue. UF already has around 3500 international students alone, plus tons of out-of-state students. The distance learning thing could be a goldmine though if done right.
