Rumors about Umichigan?

I don't know if the comments of this website below is true, but its really giving me second thoughts of going to the university... please tell me this is not true, especially for out of state students... please look it up.

http://www.s tudentsreview.com/MI/UMAA_comments.html

(ignore the space in s and t by using backspace. It came out as stars when I put them together for some reason... I wonder why? Copy and paste this onto your web browser and look it up. Please consider.)

The comments may be true to an extent. You have to take into account that the people who comment and grade a university on a public site to share with others are most likely the outliers of the population. If they want to share, it is most likely that they have negative to say about it. This person came from an “extremely small town” which probably leads to more one-on-one time with a teacher and less students in a classroom - they are not used to the big class sizes and the less personal interaction with the professor. If one decides to choose UM, they have to know that most of the introductory courses are in big lecture halls with hundreds of kids in them. For the GSIs, one has to know that UM is a large, public, diverse university with a significant amount of international students. Therefore, there is a chance that one will get a GSI that knows little English. East Quad is probably the worst dorm out of all of those in central campus. I believe that a little bad experience from this person could cause them to rant on the situation and falsify information as a way to get “revenge.” UM is also a very large school and therefore a large campus as well. There is going to be considerable walking. It would be wise to not only pick classes based on one’s interests, but to where the classes are located so that one does not have to walk far or to give enough walking time. As for the organizations part of this review, there are a ton of organizations on campus. A commitment to too many typically leads to less time on schoolwork. It was this person’s fault for joining too many of these organizations. Coming from an “extremely small town” many not expose this person to the “outside world.” She could be still stuck in the norms and customs of her town and not necessarily of Ann Arbor. One has to realize that it is going to be a new experience, just with like any moving situation. So, in conclusion, I would not believe any of this. :)

“There is going to be considerable walking. It would be wise to not only pick classes based on one’s interests, but to where the classes are located so that one does not have to walk far or to give enough walking time.”

^^^^ are you being serious right now?

“The comments may be true to an extent.”

and then you say: “So, in conclusion, I would not believe any of this”

what are you saying? the words and sentences do not make a coherent argument. This just makes me believe in the rant more now…

Wow. All I got from that pathetic, incoherent rant is that I’d never want to be friends with that person. Ever.

“Not only was orientation a living hell, my advisor gave me zero help deciding which classes to take. I am literally the most indecisive person ever”

…sounds like a you problem, pal.

“So she talked me into a different major, being that I was incredibly gullible.”

Is this a joke? If you let yourself get talked into a different major in a couple of minutes, you clearly have no idea what you’re doing. Good lord.

“Not only was walking to class every day absolutely awful (I kept track, I walked about 7 miles a day)”

Oh boo freaking hoo. So you had to walk a little. Cry me a river.

“Just yesterday, I went to a professor’s office hour to get help and she said, ‘Get out of my office you stupid girl, you know nothing.’”

Seriously doubt the truth of this. Just sounds like more complaining to me.

“The food is awful, not to mention you have to walk to the dining halls. I ate fake sushi every day because I was terrified of all the oriental food…Not only is all the food weird as ****, it’s expensive as hell.”

Suck. It. Up. Clearly this person hasn’t left behind the “small-town mentality” and just can’t deal with having to try new things and eat new foods. My god. And I didn’t feel like quoting the wildly racists parts of her diatribe, but suffice to say that dang, this girl is racist as hell. LOL.

“So when I came here I agreed to be in a TON of organizations. HUGE MISTAKE. you will NOT have time for them if you want good grades!!! and you ESPECIALLY will not have time for a job.”

…or maybe you just suck at time management…

“However, I met with a few of the current students and realized they are absolute freaks. Not to mention I was at practice one night and the med school students were putting on some artsy ass show and they were all HUUUUGE ******s.”

…I’m literally laughing out loud right now. What a judgmental jerk.

The only complaint I can see that probably actually has merit is inaccessibility of some professors, but if you didn’t see that coming when you decide to attend a university of some 40,000+ students, then I don’t know what to say to you.

This isn’t even just about Michigan (I’m a high school senior and haven’t decided where I’m going yet): I don’t think this girl would be happy at any university that doesn’t have a student body that conforms exactly to her twisted views of what isn’t “freaky,” “******y,” or what have you. I wouldn’t believe a word of this.

sirlaxalot: I made my reply as confusing and contradictory as a satire towards the original piece and towards its author. I started with a different view in the beginning and a different one in the end as like what the author did with hers. It was written as a joke. Chill. It was her problem; nothing is wrong with the university.

Wait… whatever happened to the boyfriend and the other male student from the same small town high school?

I’m still trying to figure out what fake sushi is…

I would like some more clarification on this as well from current students, because racist or not this sounds terrible.

Almost every student is very happy here. The few people that for some reason don’t like it are the ones that go complain online. Literally everyone I live with and hang out with loves the university.

Yeah what on earth is a fake sushi?

^^^Perhaps it’s made out of plastic and used as a decorative item?

To alleviate your fears, OP, these comments are ridiculous at best, not to mention racist and occasionally flat out lies. Yeah, it’s a big school, intro classes are large, the workload isn’t light, there are a lot of options, and it takes a little effort to make friends (oh wait, that’s just life in general). But I’ve yet to have an unhelpful professor. Couzens is probably the farthest dorm from anything on central. East quad is not bad at all, plus it’s about to be renovated. Lots of the dorms have dining halls in the building.

There are plenty of opportunities to do research even as a freshmen. UROP is a program specifically for that, and even without it it’s possible to find research. I will admit the housing process was a little chaotic this year, but this person is making up statistics. There are plenty of available off campus apartments. And I wouldn’t be too worried about getting stabbed. That doesn’t happen too often.

I’m out of state and I absolutely love the university and the people here, so don’t get upset about these comments. Come visit and see for yourself if Michigan is a good fit.

“Not only was walking to class every day absolutely awful (I kept track, I walked about 7 miles a day)”

lol she walked for 2 hours total, per day? she’s gotta be stupid somehow because she’s definitely doing it wrong.

anyway, most people who aren’t happy go online rant about it than those who are satisfied with their experiences. Take it as a grain of salt.
I can easily see those kids who don’t do well in my classes and just complain all day thinking the world revolves around them.

Whew, haha thanks guys. I’m having second thoughts on the second thoughts. LOL haha have you guys read the other comments on the website? There are similar comments but with more… pleasantness. Just want to be prepared for what’s coming. :)

That girl’s comments sound fabricated, misleading and exaggerated. I really can’t imagine how you could possibly walk seven miles a day unless you walk to North every day. It’s also not true that the teachers know nothing about the material. Some GSIs kind of suck but they still know what they’re talking about, they just can’t explain it. For the get out of my office you stupid girl comment, it sounds like she was probably disrespecting and offended the professor so the professor made that comment. I feel that the comment is either a flat out lie or extremely misleading. No professor would ever say that for asking a question.

I also can’t understand how she feels she’s going to be stabbed. She might just be too used to that one traffic light town she’s from and thinks that Ann Arbor is some big dangerous city since there are black people on campus. There is very little violent crime in Ann Arbor and nothing ever happens when walking at night. The weird food comment sounds just like some small town girl who isn’t used to something new and different. But she could definitely get “normal” food if she wanted to. There are plenty of restaurants that serve “normal” food and Mojo and Markley both have burgers, fries, pizza, etc. The housing comment is also bull, sure it’s a little hectic this year but she made up all those statistics. There are still apartments available and just about everyone has a place to live. UROP is also available for freshmen who want to do research.

The only things where she has a point is that some GSIs have English problems, parking is a real issue and housing was kind weird this year. Besides that it sounds to me that she just couldn’t handle how Michigan forces you to grow up and manage yourself. No one is going to simply spoon feed you and have individualized guidance throughout your undergraduate experience. I feel like she is used to being the center of attention and always being the best but when the competition improved, she wasn’t one of the best anymore and just couldn’t handle it. You have to be self motivated, know what you want without being told by anyone else and be able to handle the large workload. I’m from Michigan too and I feel that Michigan’s IS students are “normal”. The only difference is that they are the best and most motivated ones in the state. I don’t give the comments too much credence.

I’m trying my best to remain civil while reflecting on the ******** that this dumbass just spewed, but it’s impossible. She sounds ****ing ■■■■■■■■. Her comments could not be more off base.

I live half a mile off campus, and I’d say I walk a total of 2-3 miles a day, and that’s on days where I don’t take the bus at all.

Her experience literally has to be the most extreme outlier of anyone I’ve ever heard of, and if I ever had the misfortune of meeting this sad twat, I would consider transferring to get away from her. Good riddance to be honest.

Seriously, 95% of the comments in her diatribe are patently false, and the ones that aren’t completely ridiculous are so overwhelmingly exaggerated that I begin to wonder how she deluded herself into even thinking it was true.

Damn. She’s an idiot.

Thank you guys! My doubts are completely erased now. I’m going to Michigan. Period.

Here is the google maps view of her “7-mile hike” she had to take every day.

Keep in mind on central, Angell Hall is the farthest building with classes from any dorm.

I enjoyed how she called the student population stupid, and then complained about studying her ass off for a 3.5. Really? Also the advisor talking her into a different major (which she could easily switch back whenever she wanted as you don’t declare a major until late sophomore year) just means she’s an idiot.

I agree with whoever posted this before. If anything, I’m glad she transfered.

For what its worth, D (a freshman) is in love with Michigan and couldn’t imagine going anywhere else. In fact she is already depressed at the thought of graduating in 3 more years and having to leave Michigan. (She is already mumbling about going to grad school adt Mi.) Of course, since the original review was posted on the internet, it MUST be true, because everything on the internet is true. OP, good luck on your choice of Michigan, if you are like 95% of Michigan students, you will absolutely love the school.

Her take on advising is correct. As a freshman, I didn’t not receive very good advice from my LSA academic adviser during orientation. Do your homework before orientation and figure out what classes you need/want to take.
