I've been hearing some things about U of M lately.

Do they look at Freshman grades in high school? A bunch of people have told me U of M only looks at Sophomore year and beyond.

Does U of M look at the amount of times you retake the SAT? The more(>3)the worse? (This is more of a general college question, but does anyone know the answer, specifically for Michigan?)

Yes, they look at freshman grades, and as of this year, they use them to calculate high school GPA in addition to sophomore and junior years (as well as senior fall grades possibly).

You don’t have to report every SAT you take to Michigan, so if they only see 2, they assume you took it twice, unless you tell them otherwise. In other words, don’t report bad scores if you have another test that is better all around.

giants, didn’t Michigan start including Freshmen year grades in their calculation? I thought I read somewhere that Michigan’s approach to school grades have changed in two major ways:

1) Michigan used to recalculate GPA…they no longer do
2) Michigan used to onlyfactor in 10th and 11th grade…they now factor in 9th grade as well

I could be wrong, but I have a feeling the above is true.

The changes made this year, to cut a long story short, basically mean that Michigan is going to look at exactly what your high school provides the admissions office with.

Alright, thanks for the info. I still have a couple of other questions though.

Anyone know any people who got into U of M with questionable stats/credentials?

Also, how will a sketchy Freshman year but very solid Sophomore and Junior year affect my chances. I read somewhere that colleges like an upward trend in grades, so I was wondering…

For your last question, Michigan is no longer allowed to consider race as a part of admissions. There was a big lawsuit and then the residents of Michigan made it illegal for any schools in Michigan to use race as a part of admissions.

Some people still believe that while they techniquely cannot use it they still look at it.

Me. 2.99 UW GPA (but steep rising trend and 2370 SAT and seven 5s on APs).

No one gets in without proving their competence, but there are instances when adcoms overlook things another school might not be willing to forgive (for whatever reason).
