yea...

I heard that this girl got into MIT cuz she played the bagpipes..
I mean of course she wasnt a bad student but seems interesting that they would accept someone for playing a rare'y played musical instrument..

what do u guys think...ever heard this b4?
or do u think this could help anyone ( like i also play a rare instrument)

um... I doubt she got in just because she played the bagpipes.

no thats what i meant...it wasnt just cuz she played the bagpipes..she probbaly had good sats and grades and ec's and all...

but still im wondering how much that was taken into consideration..
Like colleges know there are so many piano players... so would they like someone who plays something different to come to their school so that he/she may make it more diversse...???

any comments welcome..

Probably not very much unless she won a whole bunch of awards or did something really worthwhile with her bagpipes or if the MIT orchestra really needs a bagpipe player.

That actually might be true although I don't know about the bagpipes. A teacher at my school (who went to Princeton) told us the easiest way to get into an elite college is to play the Obo because college bands/music programs need them and it is hard to find good Obo players.

We have this beastly Oboe player, who's one of the finest in the State. Like he plays Oboe for the State Orchestra and what not. He's also a pretty good student and does well. He's going to Wisconsin as I found out on Friday.

yeah...it is true, i wasnt joking. If you're amazing at an instrument that your choice school's orchestra REALLY needs, then that is a real hook.

Yup. But you don't know which instrument your choice school needs. So it's up to chance.

There was a rumor going on that some people only get accepted into UCLA or Cal. I think it has some truth to it, just from past experience, even though I doubt there was any collusion.

a person got in berkeley, "supposedly" because he played the harp.

oh the fact that he took 9 ap's helped too...(but he didn't take the courses at school and didn't score too well?)

Hey. In the young lady´s defense bagpipes are pretty hardcore.

If you own the college you will get automatic acceptance.

If your a gay, quadraplegic, nymphomaniac, ADHD, Mexican-Eskimo-Negro-Native American, Olympic Runner, then you get auto acceptance everywhere.

Take a look at various college websites that "tout" the various attributes of those accepted. Bagpipes can get you in--don't underestimate the unusual. So can being a pilot or a bellydancer. They're trying to create a community, social engineering of sorts so don't kid yourself.
